Embracing the Summertime Spirit in the Workplace As we dive into the sunny days of summer, it's a perfect time to reflect on the vibrant energy this season brings to our professional lives. Summertime isn't just about vacations and relaxation; it's also a wonderful opportunity to rejuvenate our work environment and inspire creativity. Here are a few ways we can embrace the summertime spirit in the workplace: Encourage Flexibility: With longer days and beautiful weather, consider offering flexible work hours or remote work options. This allows team members to enjoy the summer while staying productive. Promote Work-Life Balance: Remind your team of the importance of taking breaks and using their vacation days. A well-rested mind is a creative and productive mind! Organize Team-Building Activities: Plan outdoor team-building activities or social events. A company picnic or a day of volunteering can strengthen bonds and boost morale. Celebrate Achievements: Use the relaxed summer vibe to celebrate your team's accomplishments. Whether it's a small win or a major milestone, recognition can go a long way in motivating everyone. Encourage Personal Development: Summer can be a great time for professional growth. Encourage your team to take advantage of any quieter periods to pursue training, learn new skills, or work on personal projects. Let's use this summer as an opportunity to refresh our goals, energize our teams, and foster a positive and dynamic workplace culture. Remember, a happy and engaged team is the cornerstone of success. How are you planning to make the most of the summer at work? “My executive assistant is a professional wrestler… I love the fact that the people in our company have [other] interests,” shares CEO Everette Taylor on Kickstarter's four-day workweek. Our careers can feel all-consuming, but Taylor argues that pursuing other passions is beneficial for the workplace too. “We have musicians, artists, filmmakers and entrepreneurs. They have these very unique experiences and they bring those unique perspectives back into the space, and they have something to live for outside of the work.” Kickstarter’s 4-day workweek helps make this possible for their employees, something Taylor encourages others to adopt. ❓How do you find time to pursue passions outside of work? Mainstream movement towards more condensed workweeks is long overdue. The 40 hour workweek was a necessary concession of the fight for labor rights--not the end goal. As technology improves, civilization advances, and our understanding of the world and the people in it grows ever greater, we should keep aspiring to make life better, kinder, fuller, more robust for every single person--yes, that means higher pay and fewer hours! I work for a nonprofit with a salaried 4-day, hybrid model workweek. My partner, a healthcare worker, works a 3-day 36-hour workweek. As a result, we both have time to also be in school, to volunteer in our community, to learn new life skills, and to be available for our families and loved ones. And not that this should be the reason, but my place of employment also benefits from the fact that my colleagues who work there are more well-rounded, well-rested, well-respected human beings with diverse interests and the chance to develop full, passionate lives outside of the workplace. The work we do doesn't exist in a vacuum! It matters that we have varied perspectives, varied experiences, and the flexibility to expand them constantly.
