Did you know that 43% of STEM graduates feel unprepared for their first job? This gap between academic training and industry needs is a growing challenge, leading to longer onboarding times and costly training for companies. Key Facts: 60% of employers report that STEM graduates lack the practical skills required for their roles. Only 37% of STEM students participate in internships or co-op programs that could bridge this gap. How Can We Close This Gap? Curriculum Revamp 📃 : Universities must integrate more hands-on, project-based learning to align with industry standards. Industry Collaboration 🏭 : Stronger partnerships between educational institutions and industries can provide real-world experience through internships. Continuous Learning 📚 : Encouraging lifelong learning and upskilling is crucial as technology evolves. At Hard Hat, we're tackling this issue head-on by building a platform to equip engineering students and professionals with the skills that industries demand. How Can You Help? Engineers Canada is proud to announce the launch of Pathway to Engineering, a new program to connect engineering graduates with the people and knowledge to become licensed as engineers. Follow us at https://lnkd.in/gNiDyteN and share with the engineering graduates in your life. Learn more at https://lnkd.in/gNEctQwz! Engineering educators Engineering educators work incredibly hard to prepare students for a career in engineering. As an educator, you are often the first connection aspiring engineers will have with the profession. The information you provide and the way you speak about the engineering profession set a tone that lasts with students for many years. Across hundreds of disciplines and specialties, engineers play a critical role in our society, from designing groundbreaking innovations to driving the solutions to the biggest challenges our society faces. Like many integral professions that are dedicated to serving the public, engineering is a licensed profession. The education provided to an engineering graduate is a foundational stepping stone from which they can move forward and become a fully licensed engineer. You can help set students on a path where their engineering education makes a real difference in the lives of Canadians and others across the world. This includes helping students to understand more about licensure, its value as a professional, and when it’s required. Just as you would encourage students to fully understand and engage with their coursework, you can inspire your students to really explore what the profession has to offer for graduates who pursue licensure after school. The future of engineering education may be set to transform, as EngineeringUK responds to the Prime Minister's recent apprentice reform package announcement. The Head of Policy and Public Affairs, Beatrice Barleon, calls for a more workshop-focused BTEC for engineering operatives. This could potentially enhance the education of apprentices, while also simplifying processes for many small businesses. By adjusting the focus towards practical learning in workshops, these transformative suggestions could reinvent the route engineering apprentices take towards their careers. This could be a significant step for the engineering industry, providing a tighter bridge between classroom education and real-world application. #EngineeringEducation #ApprenticeshipReforms

There are just a few places left on this year's Select Partnership Scheme! Engineering professionals: you have until 10am TOMORROW (Thu 08 Feb) to register your attendance. Select is your chance to connect with undergraduate and postgraduate engineering students at the University of East Anglia. After registering, you'll receive a pack containing the students' applications and the engineering disciplines they're interested in. You can then select which students you'd like to meet for speed interviews at the Select event. You don't need to be recruiting to take part - Select is all about building connections and giving the students a chance to refine their interview skills before graduating. There's an optional preparation session next week (Tue 13 Feb, 12-1pm) where we'll provide more info about the main event and the venue. You'll also have the chance to ask any questions you may have about the Select scheme. Finally, you'll attend the main event on Wed 06 March on UEA campus. As well as meeting the students, you'll be able to network with UEA academics, technicians, and the other companies in attendance. Lunch and refreshments will be provided. #UEAEngineering #EngineeringStudents #Employability [Image description: Two professionals interview an engineering student at Select 2023. Happy Engineers Week Everyone! This week let us reflect on the journey of innovation, problem-solving, and progress that defines the field of engineering. This special week is not just a celebration; it's a recognition of the relentless spirit of engineers who envision a better world and work tirelessly to turn those visions into reality. Engineering is a diverse field that spans countless disciplines –mechanical to electrical, civil to software, and beyond. Each branch plays a crucial role in shaping our future, pushing the boundaries of what's possible, and improving our quality of life. Engineers work behind the scenes to tackle some of the most pressing challenges of our time, innovating for sustainability, efficiency, and safety. To those contemplating a career in engineering – your curiosity, creativity, and perseverance have the potential to lead you to remarkable places. The path of an engineer is one of lifelong learning, where each challenge is an opportunity for growth and each failure a lesson in resilience. Let's use Engineers Week to reflect on our collective achievements, inspire the next generation, and foster a community that celebrates every contribution, no matter how small. Here's to the past, present, and future engineers whose visions and hard work drive humanity forward. To kickstart Engineers Week, I had the fantastic opportunity to chat with Dr. Peter Crouch, Dean of the College of Engineering at the University of Texas at Arlington. We dove into a variety of key topics crucial for becoming a great engineer and discussed the support and resources the College offers to help students excel. It was an engaging and enlightening conversation, with Dr. Crouch thoughtfully addressing every question that came up. I was also privileged to have a personal interaction with Dr. Paul Componation, Associate Dean of the College of Engineering. I presented some of my concerns and posed questions related to the Department of Industrial Engineering. Dr. Componation generously provided answers, leading to an engaging and insightful conversation. This experience not only addressed my queries but also offered a deeper understanding of the department's direction and initiatives, further highlighting the commitment of the university's leadership to student success and academic excellence. #engineersweek #stemeducation #stemwomen #engineeringleadership #engineeringexcellence #utaarlingtonengineering
