The “Rule of 100” may be an effective sales tactic but it didn’t work for the latest #costco offer. Here’s why. While saving $50 on a $200, same-day delivery order (pictured) got my attention, there were three flaws in the Costco Wholesale promotion: 1) The ol’ #instacart mark-up slowly eroded much of the savings 2) The eligible product selection was narrow compared to what’s available on Costco’s main website, and 3) The realization that $50 off on a $200 purchase only equates to a 25% discount It’s the last element of the #ruleof100 that retailers hope consumers don’t catch on to when pushing a high-spend offer. But, the reality is there are a growing number of savvy #customers who are scrutinizing every deal, especially with #inflation and #affordability top of mind. Is this the end of the “Rule of 100”? The power of Costco Wholesale: When Costco decides to get serious about a product, competitors are forced to react. Like lots of products, the cost of plastic storage bins has skyrocketed. Something that cost $7-9 just a few years ago, might be $12-17, depending what store you are at. Then about a month ago, every Costco was loaded with pallets of yellow and black bins, at $8.99 each with a $1 off coupon per. $7.99 each! I bought 10 that day, and really didn't even need them. I just couldn't help myself. So then over the next weeks, cruising stores as a hobby to see trends like my buddy John Andrews, I noticed everyone lowering prices: The Home Depot on sale for $9.99, Walmart price buster deal was $12, and so on. It used to piss me off when someone with a similar product or service used to copy a campaign, service offering, marketing message, whatever. Now however, I take it as a compliment and a form of flattery. They are trying to keep up with us. Why? We are the best at what we do. Wholesale clubs vs. Superstores — Who's in the lead? According to our latest data, the winner is... Wholesale chains 🛒 – which receive about 20% of all visits to Walmart, Target, Costco Wholesale, Sam’s Club (owned by Walmart), and BJ’s Wholesale Club –generally outperformed classic superstore banners during the first four months of the year. Q1 2024 visits to Costco Wholesale, Sam’s Club, and BJ’s Wholesale Club up 8.9%, 6.1%, and 5.6%, respectively, on a YoY basis. Visits to Target and Walmart also increased in Q1 2024 (3.5% and 3.9% YoY), respectively. Walmart, by far the largest retailer in the space - receiving over 60% of all visits to Target, Walmart, Costco, Sam’s Club, and BJ’s - is particularly strong in the South and seems to still have room to grow, especially in the Midwest and Northeast. Overall, wholesale club lead visit growth, but classic superstores maintain overall visit edge. Our drivers run into this situation ALL the time. Really throws a wrench into their schedules. The size of the shipper/receiver is not always reflective of their efficiency in loading/unloading. One of the biggest receivers we deal with is Costco Wholesale . I can’t remember the last time we spent over 2 hours delivering there. No lumpers either. What are other companies that are good about loading/unloading times?
