Continuing our series on the work of mental health and learning disabilities teams across Grampian, meet colleagues from the dementia assessment unit which is part of Skene Ward at Royal Cornhill Hospital. They care for people aged over 65 with dementia, often in the later stages of their condition. Explaining how they support sometimes challenging behaviours, senior charge nurse Leigh Donald explains: “Distraction is the first thing we would do. It might be as simple as going to get a cup of tea or a conversation that will then distract them from what they are stressing about. We get to know our patients very well and we know what works for each person; it’s different for everybody. Seeing patients settle when they are distressed is rewarding, and providing support for relatives is also important.” This is another good example of how important team work is across mental health services, with colleagues also reflecting on the strong bonds and friendships they develop.
