With the new Carer's Leave Regulations taking effect from 6 April 2024, it’s a step forward for employees who balance their professional life with caring responsibilities. These regulations allow employees caring for dependants with long-term support needs to take up to one week of unpaid leave each year, offering flexibility and support. Caregiving is an incredibly rewarding role, but it's also one that can feel isolating. When you're focused on someone else's well-being, it's easy to lose sight of your own emotional and social needs. Here's why—and how—building a support network is vital for caregivers. 🔗 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗠𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀: We are social beings. Without meaningful interactions, our mental health suffers. A strong support network offers emotional backup, advice, and sometimes just the comfort of knowing someone understands. 🌱 𝗣𝗲𝗲𝗿 𝗚𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗽𝘀: Connecting with others in a similar caregiving role can offer specific, relatable advice and emotional understanding that friends or family may not provide. 📲 𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗰𝘂𝗲: Video calls, support group meetings, and even simple texts can go a long way. Following the release of the 2024-2025 State budget, the Commissioners at the Mental Health and Wellbeing Commission have issued a letter seeking clarification from the government regarding its decision-making process, priorities, and the implementation of the recommendations of the Royal Commission into Victoria’s Mental Health System. Over the past two weeks, we’ve been listening to consumers, carers, peak bodies, lived experience experts, advocacy agencies and other stakeholders. We’ve heard stakeholders express disappointment and confusion about the future of mental health reform in Victoria, and we recognise that this may be a distressing and uncertain time for many.
