Ten pharmacies are closing every week on average due to a 30% shortfall in real terms since 2015. The Government report from the Health and Social Care Committee that details this was just released less than two weeks ago. They found that the community pharmacy contractual framework is not fit for purpose and that the funding does not even allow enough to cover the basic cost of medicines. How do you plan to expand pharmacy services even further when we are so short of adequate funding?

Working in the NHS is hard It always has been. It’s unfair, unforgiving and often unkind. It’s also inspiring, amazing and utterly beautiful in its own way- the phenomenal impact of care We are stood at the edge of a precarious ledge. Money or quality. We have been here before on multiple occasions in the last three decades… You are going to say we can have both… but can we really in the face of extreme demand in MH LD services which is independently confirmed. We are seeing the same patterns all over the world, not just in the UK can we have both? Is this next stage we are entering into foreseeable and preventable? I will retire and I will not be here to see the full ramifications play out over the next decade. I fear for our future MH leaders, this outcome without intelligent targeted intervention now, will be the toughest period in our history. I am not sure we are modelling what could happen, if our demand spirals on this current trajectory? I am so sorry to paint a picture of doom, but my words are to convey “car crash ahead” change before we can’t….. Let’s please stay on the side of nurturing, effective and life saving care and the beauty of the NHS at its best 🙏

NHS leaders facing “drastic measures” to make ends meet as NHS responds to tightest financial settlement in years. Responding to the NHS Confederation’s survey of NHS leaders across trusts, integrated care boards (ICBs) and primary care in England, there was a clear call on the next government to protect local NHS organisations from having to further cut staffing levels. Matthew Taylor, chief executive of the NHS Confederation said: “The NHS is operating under immense financial strain, with some local services already cutting or freezing clinical and managerial posts, as well as cutting some patient services. They are facing up to some drastic measures to balance their books this year. “While NHS leaders know they must continue to run their services as efficiently as possible, this is the tightest financial position the NHS has faced in years”. The total cost for cleaning services was £1.3 billion. This is an increase of 10.3 per cent since 2021/22. These are the results from the 2022/23 Estates Return Information Collection (ERIC), a mandatory collection for all NHS trusts including Ambulance trusts.
