Initial labour assessment – new guide We have details of a brand new guide in our midwifery section: Initial labour assessment. The author of this guide is Sam Copping, Lecturer in Midwifery at the University of Suffolk. It has also undergone double-blind peer review. A pregnant woman or person will often contact their chosen maternity service if they suspect that they are in labour, which is characterised by the onset of regular contractions. The initial labour assessment may take place in the person’s chosen place of birth (midwifery- or obstetric-led unit, or at their home if they are planning a home birth), depending on local policy. This assessment may also be undertaken in local maternity triage or assessment units.   Assessing the onset of labour is a fundamental skill for midwives and obstetricians and this fully illustrated guide describes the elements that should be included in the initial labour assessment, regardless of the planned place of birth.   It is important to adhere to universal precautions and maintain the privacy and dignity of the pregnant woman or person throughout the assessment. #nursing #pregnancy #midwifery

I’m always surprised that people don’t know they have to option to choose to have their baby outside if the traditional models of care. Comments like ‘oh I didn’t even know that was a thing!’ Or ‘Is that even something people choose?’ Or even better ‘what happens if….x,y,z’ love a what if comment! Ok but What’s this private Midwifery stuff all about? In a very small nutshell…we are registered midwives who choose to practise outside the traditional offerings. We specialise in women centred, main character care, building relationships & choice into care bundles that clients can access at any point in this journey. Homebirth, hospital birth, caesarean support, long term postnatal care & loads more choice! NEW RESOURCE ALERT: In collaboration with community birth experts, AIM developed a Community Birth Transfer Resource Kit (CBTRK) to share best practices for safe and timely transfers regardless of birth setting or care model. In this resource kit, “community birth” refers to planned birth at home or in a freestanding birth center, most commonly in a midwifery model of care. Creating systems that promote safer birth in all scenarios is a key component to improving the safety and quality of care provided to all patients. Home births are being chosen 60% more than ever before! To say women and families are tired of the often mediocre maternal care being received in our country would be an understatement. While #midwiferycare is the norm in the majority of high-income countries, this care is treated only as a luxury in America -- often not covered by insurance and harder to access for the majority. SAFE BIRTH CARE SHOULD NOT BE A LUXURY! The lack of access to midwives directly contributes to America’s shocking number of maternal deaths. THIS is why #birthFUND exists and why we are advocating for better birthing resources and more accessible midwifery care!
