What media are you consuming this Autism Acceptance and Awareness month? Here are my top picks! This month I'm reading: Autistic and Black by Kala Allen Omeiza "In this powerful insight into the lives of Black autistic people, Kala Allen Omeiza brings together a community of voices from across the world, spanning religions, sexuality and social economic status to provide a deep and rich understanding of what it means to be autistic and Black. Exploring everything from self-love and appreciation, to the harsh realities of police brutality, anti-Black racism, and barriers to care, as well as amplifying the voices of the inspiring advocates who actively work towards change, protection, and acceptance for themselves and others, this book is an empowering force, reminding you that as a Black autistic person, you are enough." This month I'm watching: Heart Break High on Netflix Season 2 is out on the 11th of April (today!!) and I think we are all excited to see Autistic actress Chloe Hayden again as authentically represented Autistic character Quinni! If you haven't already watched season 1 it's not too late to jump in - you'll laugh, you'll cry, and you'll have some authentic autistic representation!! This month I'm listening to: Princess and the Pea with Annie Crowe This has been on my to listen list for about 2 years now and I'm finally committing to it! Annie Crowe is a Human Rights Lawyer, Disability and Mental Health Advocate, and the Founder and Lead Consultant of NeuroAccess, a consultancy specialising in equity and accessibility for neurodivergent people. Episodes I'm particularly interested in are: - Long COVID and the Autistic Community - Psychologists can be Autistic Too - Neurodiversity at Work Will you join me in consuming any of this tasty Autistic media? What's already on your list this month? Hashtags: #ActuallyAutistic #AutisticMediaRepresentation #AutisticAdult #AutismAcceptance #AutismAwareness

This year's Autism Acceptance Month holds a special meaning for me. Just six months ago, I received an autism diagnosis that finally explained so much about myself. Looking back on a challenging 2023, it makes perfect sense. The diagnosis has been a turning point. I'm kinder to myself now, with a whole new understanding of my needs. I'm learning to make accommodations that truly work for me. However, navigating resources as an employed autistic adult can be tough. While the online world is booming, finding an in-person community feels like searching for a hidden gem. This #AutismAcceptanceMonth, I want to share my story and connect with others on a similar journey. Here's what I've learned so far: Self-compassion is key. Understanding my neurodiversity has been incredibly empowering. Finding the right community matters. While online resources are great, I crave in-person connection. If you're an autistic adult or know someone who might be, here are some ways to get involved: Share your story! Let's break down stigma by raising awareness. Advocate for inclusion. Let's build workplaces that celebrate neurodiversity. Know any autistic meetups in your area? Please send me a message! Remember, be kind to yourself and others. #AutismAcceptance #Neurodiversity #FindingMyCommunity

🌟 Celebrating Autistic Pride Day: Embracing Neurodiversity 🌟 Today, we honor the unique strengths and perspectives of individuals on the autism spectrum. Autistic Pride Day is about acceptance, understanding, and empowerment. Autism is a different way of experiencing the world, not a disorder to be cured. Embracing neurodiversity enriches our workplaces, communities, and society. Here's how we can support and celebrate our autistic colleagues and friends: ✨ Promote Inclusivity: Make environments accessible, offer flexible work arrangements, and support sensory needs. 🧠 Foster Understanding: Educate yourself and others about autism for more compassionate communication. 🌟 Celebrate Strengths: Leverage the unique talents of autistic individuals in pattern recognition, detail orientation, and creative problem-solving. 🗣️ Listen and Learn: Elevate autistic voices. Their insights are invaluable for true inclusivity. On this Autistic Pride Day, let’s commit to celebrating neurodiversity and building a more inclusive society. #AutisticPrideDay #Neurodiversity #Inclusion #Diversity #AutismAwareness #CelebrateDifferences

Thursday 11th marks #WorldParkinsonsDay and it is a great time to learn more about how you can help those around you! Within their lifetimes, 1 in 37 people will be diagnosed with Parkinson’s this means that the current number of 153,000 will double by 2030. Parkinson’s is a neurological condition which affects the brain’s ability to produce dopamine – the chemical which helps us control movement. It’s a type of progressive condition – meaning symptoms appear gradually and slowly get worse, as the brain becomes increasingly damaged over time. #access ID: Pink to purple gradient. At the top in white text is the phrase “World Parkinson’s Day” Below is a pair of hands with the earth as a background they are holding a grey ribbon to represent Parkinson’s. In the bottom right is The Blue Sky Social Care Card logo. #disability #WorldParkinsonsDay #accessibility #inclusion

Invisible Warriors: a 501c3 NONPROFIT, Empowering Women Veterans with PTSD, MST, and Invisible Illnesses
Imagine you're passing a message to a friend. You say something, they hear it, but how they understand it depends on their own experiences and beliefs. This is how we make sense of what we hear or read. But sometimes, on social media especially, our own biases get in the way. We might quickly judge something based on what we already think, leading to arguments. Now, imagine a teacher trying to explain something without taking sides. It's tough! I've struggled with this myself. But with your input, I'm trying to improve. Think about invisible disabilities. They're called "invisible" because you can't see them, like chronic illnesses. Even the people who have these struggles might not realize they have a disability. So, when we try to talk about it, the message doesn't always come across clearly. That's why we're tweaking our mission. Instead of focusing on chronic and autoimmune invisible disabilities, we're changing the wording to include ongoing invisible illnesses. Does that make more sense to you? Let me know your thoughts! #ChronicIllness #AutoimmuneDiseases #MedicalChallenges #LongtermIllnesses #InvisibleWarriors Elizabeth Seamon Liz Semaan Christine Van Haren, RPh, BCPA Lori Smoker Young Lara Hobson Lara Minges, MSW, CFNC, FNLP Blake Madden National Council of Nonprofits
