Which #Scope4 avoided emissions are stuck in sawdust? Why not look in the test tubes? I visited Boreal Bioproducts to get my hands on some of the extractions their team is pulling out of the lumber sector. Based in #Espoo, Finland 🇫🇮, they use a chemical free, hot water pressurization process to capture valuable sugars for use with food, cosmetics, coatings, and even glue. Jaakko Pajunen, managing director, brought me through the research lab to see the R&D in action! On the tour, I met Alexander Henn, their lignin technology expert, filling up a beaker with resins from the latest experiment. He's continuing to refine the next generation of extracts that will continue to make their products stand out as sustainable alternatives to synthetic fibers and resins. ClimatePoint takes inspiration from solutions like these to connect founders with corporations facing environmental challenges and emission reduction targets. Through dynamic #LCA and #impactInvestment structures that follow #Article9 of the #SFDR, we can effectively #quantify the impact of these offerings and align them with #CSRD reporting standards. This sticky solution is just the beginning of their extended product line, so look forward to learning more about how they can improve our everyday materials! Antti Kamarainen, market development director, showed me just a few possibilities coming off the shelf. 🌱♻ Gelatin and collagen peptides harness the power of sustainability by using by-products from the meat and farmed fish processing industry as raw materials. These sources are well-managed, natural and renewable. By converting these by-products into high-value protein products, greases, and minerals, the environmental impact can be reduced. This process exemplifies the circular economy, making gelatin and collagen peptides products with a positive impact on overall sustainability. Sappi people are powering our sustainability journey forward. 🌱 ♻️ Read what Alfeld Mill’s Pulp and Utilities Manager, Toni Handke has to say about it. ⬇️ You might say I was born into paper making. I grew up in a mill town in Germany that produces one million tonnes of paper a year, which led to my fascination with paper science and an eventual PhD in process engineering. After 20 years in the business, it’s hugely satisfying to see how the reputation of paper has positively evolved. When I got started, paper was not so valued as the bio-based material it is today. Now, as the world confronts climate change and pollution from plastic waste, society is awakening to the power of trees to provide solutions to these major challenges. Here at Alfeld, my team and I play our part to make our pulping process more efficient and sustainable. I'm also a member of Sappi Europe's Sustainability Council, where I use my manufacturing expertise to enhance our sustainability roadmap. The question that’s always on my mind: how can we unlock more and better value from every resource we use at Alfeld. PhD in Chemical and Environmental Engineering. At present, postdoctoral researcher in CML - Universiteit Leiden thanks to postdoctoral fellow from Galician Government (ED481B-2023-072).
🔊 New article published on Journal of Environmental Chemical Engineering, the 33rd for me! A wonderful collaboration with my lab mates Sofía Estévez Rivadulla and Ricardo Rebolledo-Leiva, PhD about embedding sustainability and circularity assessments for biorefineries. This article reviews various evaluation methodologies and indicators to effectively evaluate bio-based process schemes. Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), Product Environmental Footprint (PEF), Green Chemistry Principles (GCP), certification scheme requirements and Circular Economy Action Plans are reviewed and integrated into a precise assessment framework. To determine their effectiveness, three biorefinery models were evaluated: valorization of apple vinasses, grape must and chickpea peel. Through the combined analysis of bio-based scenarios, it has been possible to identify their benefits, bottlenecks and limitations, and to validate a comprehensive assessment framework that allows an accurate, effective and conscious analysis of bio-based models, promoting their development and market penetration.
