🧫 AMR: let’s talk about #AntifungalResistance Usually, #AMR is discussed in terms of bacteria and antibiotics, and often antifungal resistance remains overlooked. But actually, infections caused by drug-resistant #fungi are a global public health threat 🌍 Antifungal resistance can occur for several reasons. 💊 It may result from the overuse or misuse of #antifungals in healthcare, for example when patients skip doses, or stop therapy too soon, or take a too low dose. 🔬 Especially in low-resource settings the lack of quality #diagnostics may lead physicians in failing a correct diagnosis, and starting an inappropriate therapy, as a consequence. Moreover, access to antifungal drugs may be limited in these settings. 🌿Finally, even the use of fungicides in agriculture can contribute to antifungal resistance. But each one of us can play a role to counter the emergence and spread of antifungal resistance. 📢 Wash your hands regularly and thoroughly. Take antifungal medicines only when needed and exactly as prescribed by your physician. Following these two simple rules you are already saving lives! "#AntimicrobialResistance has become a major challenge for global health, jeopardising our ability to treat #InfectiousDiseases effectively. One of the factors contributing to the increase in antimicrobial resistance is the overuse and misuse of #Antibiotics in human medicine, agriculture and veterinary practices that led to the selection of #Bacteria resistant to a plethora of antibiotics. The consequences of antimicrobial resistance are considerable, resulting in increased #Morbidity and #Mortality rates, prolonged illness duration, and higher healthcare costs. This threat has led the World Health Organisation (#WHO) to prioritise research and development of antibiotics for drug-resistant Enterobacterales such as #EscherichiaColi and #KlebsiellaPneumoniae. A major barrier for developing novel antibiotic classes for Gram-negative bacteria is getting sufficient compound into these bacteria to kill them, as very efficient broad-specificity #EffluxPumps can extrude various antibiotics from the bacteria, which results in the persistence of the bacterial infection!" #Fasciolosis is a #parasitic disease considered as emerging and #neglected by the #WHO. #Sheep are highly susceptible to this disease. This work evaluated a #diagnostic assay for fasciolosis using a number of samples collected from sheep experimentally infected six weeks after infection, used in a #vaccine challenge trial. The #sensitivity and #specificity of the #ELISA indicated its usefulness for the #early #detection of #Fasciola #hepatica. World Tuberculosis Day, marked each year on 24 March, is an occasion to raise awareness and advocate for efforts to eliminate TB. While all are working on effective TB regimen to STOP TB, there is increase in prevalence of NTM infections at alarming rate. The nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) have recently emerged as important bacterial pathogens of both animals and humans. Since NTM may cause illness similar to TB and anti-TB treatment is often initiated only on the basis of acid-fast bacilli smear-positive microscopy results, NTM species has been found to be misdiagnosed as TB. Also, NTM generally does not respond to anti-TB treatments, it results in poor treatment leading to high level of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) displayed, which complicates treatment and potential successful outcomes. Carbapenem-resistant A baumannii is already considered an urgent public health threat by the World Health Organization and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention because it's so difficult to treat. Some studies have found mortality rates as high as 72% in patients with carbapenem-resistant A baumannii infections. But among the 54 distinct combinations of double carbapenemases identified, the analysis also found the co-existence of metallo-beta-lactamase and tetracycline-inactivating genes, which confer resistance to many of the recently approved beta-lactam/beta-lactamase inhibitor combinations (such as ceftazidime/avibactam and meropenem/vaborbactam) and tigecycline, all of which have been considered potential treatments for carbapenem-resistant A baumannii infections. 

🌐 As we approach the upcoming UN High-Level Meeting on Antimicrobial Resistance (#AMR), it's crucial to spotlight the diagnostic challenges many healthcare systems face, especially in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Many hospitals in LMICs still depend on traditional culture-based methods, where bacteria from patient samples must be cultured to identify the pathogen and determine antibiotic resistance. This process can take 2-3 days—critical time that can delay proper treatment. Despite the proven ability of diagnostics to optimize antibiotic use, ensuring accurate and timely, diagnostics remain inaccessible and underutilized in many regions. At FIND, we are working with partners to increase access to testing for AMR related infections at the primary care level. Digital dermatitis (DD) or Mortallaro disease strongly affects dairy cows, giving lameness, pain, milk production decrease and leading to higher renewal rate of cows. Prevalence and incidence are quite high worldwide although often underestimated in practice. Treatments of the most severe cases are often done with oxytetracycline sprays. This quite recent article shows antibiotic resistances development and concern among the involved germs. I wanted to share this and recall that #Pietix (top feeding, in minerals or feed; 100% plants based product) from #Biodevas helps to reduce incidence of DD in farms and reduce the related use of antibiotics. The rise of carbapenemase-producing gram-negative pathogens, particularly those producing metallo-β-lactamases (MBLs), poses a global health threat. These diverse enzymes, found in various organisms like Enterobacterales and Pseudomonas spp., can hydrolyze most β-lactam antibiotics, leading to challenging infections associated with increased mortality and prolonged hospital stays. New 🇬🇧 5-year National Action Plan on Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR), 4 themes: 1 - Reducing need for/unintentional exposure to antimicrobials 2 - Optimising antimicrobials’ use 3 - Innovation, supply, access 4 - Being a good global partner https://lnkd.in/gF6rJMjv Antimicrobials (e.g. antibiotics 💊) are relied on globally to save lives. As harm causing microorganisms evolve resistance to them, drugs stop working. This occurs naturally, but is accelerated when the wrong drugs are used, when drugs are used incorrectly, and through unintended exposure. AMR was associated with 5 million deaths globally in 2019. By 2050, the world risks 10 million lives lost annually + significant economic losses. This is a major challenge for all countries. Cooperation is key. The UK’s plan takes a One Health approach, spanning humans, animals, and the environment. It builds on longstanding UK leadership and achievements in: - reducing human/animal antibiotic use - surveillance - research - stimulating global awareness - helping secure international commitment What’s next? The UN General Assembly High Level Meeting on AMR in September is a critical opportunity to advance global action and cooperation. Building momentum for this, the UK Government and the Royal Society is today hosting a global event, “The World Together Solving the Antibiotic Emergency”, and the UK is announcing AMR combatting investments in Africa and the Caribbean (link in comments below), building on investments in partnerships in Asia and Africa announced last year. Canada and the UK are natural partners for collaboration. Canada also has an AMR action plan, is a fellow G7 and Commonwealth nation, and the UK and Canada have much in common in values, scientific excellence, and systems of governance. Canada and UK already have important links and cooperation on AMR, like the Innovative Veterinary Solutions for Antimicrobial Resistance (InnoVet-AMR) initiative, to reduce risks from AMR in animals, and support low- and middle-income countries. On a personal level, when at Public Health England, I had very helpful collaboration with Canadian microbiology experts in the delivery of a Commonwealth-linked AMR workshop with Caribbean partners. As the UK and Canada both work towards the UN’s High Level Meeting, I am keen to better understand where there may be opportunities to strengthen UK-Canada AMR cooperation and collaboration, now and into the future. I’m also interested in how new and emerging technologies may help combat AMR (e.g. AI and Engineering Biology, where the UK and Canada both have great expertise). It was helpful to see the topic of fungal resistance being raised at the SynBio 6.0 (synthetic biology) conference at UBC this morning. Looking forward to an ambitious and successful UN meeting in September, and continued and strengthening UK-Canada cooperation in this critical area. #AMR
