AMR, or Antimicrobial Resistance, is a natural phenomenon where infection-causing microorganisms (germs) such as bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites evolve to become resistant to the antimicrobial medicines that were designed to treat them. These antimicrobial medicines include antibiotics, antifungals, antivirals and antiparasitics. AMR is a global health emergency, yet most patients and the public have never heard of it before. It is important that we can all play a role in protecting these life-saving medicines so they continue to work when we need them most. We've created this short video which explains the basics of AMR. Promoting patient & public advocacy, community & awareness to mobilise action against Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR)
About us
Founded by Vanessa Carter, a patient advocate who survived a highly-resistant MRSA infection, The AMR Narrative is a registered charity that works to develop advocacy capacity among patients and the public to improve participation and mobilise action against Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR). As patients and consumers, pet owners, parents, or carers we play a pivotal role in advocating for the appropriate use of antimicrobial medicines. By protecting antimicrobial medicines in humans, animals, the environment, and food sectors we are ensuring a more sustainable future for everyone especially those who are most vulnerable to untreatable infections. Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is not simply a scientific problem requiring scientific solutions, but a societal issue in which individual behaviours and choices play a significant part. A step change is required in citizen awareness of antimicrobial resistance. In a new Nature Communications Comment from Fleming Initiative, The AMR Narrative, British Society for Antimicrobial Chemotherapy (BSAC), and World Health Organization, the co-authors propose we go further still: directly engaging and involving patients and public in scoping, testing and scaling solutions to this global health crisis. To maximise impact, we must forge novel partnerships with those not currently engaged with AMR, including across the cultural, creative, advocacy and entertainment sectors. Drawing on their engagement, storytelling and campaigning skills will enable us to connect our knowledge and call for action most effectively with the widest possible audiences. We must move beyond awareness to action, recognising the benefits of directly engaging and involving the public in scoping, testing and scaling solutions. "Participatory Approaches" as now recognised in the recent 2024 UN Political Declaration, must not become another buzz term in the fight against Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR). Instead, it should underscore the necessity of involving and engaging everyone—patients, carers, and the public alike. This is particularly crucial given the multifaceted nature of this global health threat. While raising awareness is important, it often remains one-sided. To design truly meaningful interventions, we must prioritise listening to those most impacted. Our Founder and patient survivor, Vanessa Carter recently contributed as a co-author to this article alongside Michael Corley (British Society for Antimicrobial Chemotherapy), Emily Scott-Dearing and Lord Ara Darzi (Fleming Initiative), and Philip Mathew (World Health Organization). Just like finding the right key to fit a lock, diagnostic tests help identify the specific antimicrobial medicine needed to treat an infection. Diagnostics also play a crucial role in combating Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR). #theAMRnarrative #DiagnosisMatters #AMR #AntimicrobialResistance

Antimicrobial Resistance or AMR isn't yet understood by most people, in fact, many don't know it exists even though it kills millions each year and by 2050 it has been predicted that it will kill more people than cancer. This World AMR Awareness Week our charity is working hard to spread the word, not resistant infections. Watch our video which provides a basic explanation about what AMR is. Social media is a powerful conduit for change in the advocacy world, but most often it can be difficult to know how to choose various platforms and what to advocate for in the Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) space. In support of the World AMR Awareness Week theme, "Educate. Advocate. Act Now", we are pleased to launch our Social Media Advocacy Toolkit for AMR which features basic step-by-step guides to help you take action online not only during this awareness week, but all year round! Our founder, Vanessa Carter sat down with fellow AMR patient survivor, Robert (Rob) Purdie to learn more about his experience with Coccidioidal Meningitis (commonly known as valley fever) and the work he is doing to create awareness in the fungal community through a charity he co-founded called MyCARE. He is also a member of the World Health Organization Task Force of AMR Survivors. Fungal infections have received a lot of attention lately. For those impacted by these diseases and those caring for them, the attention is long overdue. A few weeks ago, global leaders were preparing for the United Nations General Assembly High-Level Meeting on Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) which took place on the 26th of September 2024 in New York. The AMR Narrative was proudly represented by our Founder and patient survivor, Vanessa Carter and Trustee, Dr Wendy Thompson and we participated in several side events as well as the main meeting. While significant progress has been made in acknowledging the importance of including patients, carers, and survivors in the AMR response, as reflected in the Political Declaration, further efforts are necessary to turn this recognition into reality. Additionally, having more patient representatives and groups present at these important meetings is essential to ensure their voices are heard and considered in the decision-making process.
