Did you know that the expansion of 5G networks and energy grid upgrades will contribute to ~40k km of high-voltage power lines being constructed and refurbished in Europe by 2030? This week, we analysed 40 European cables & wires players and gathered insights about how incumbents have taken steps to increase margins through offering higher-margin connection and maintenance services. PE-led interest has been low, with <20% of the identified assets being sponsor-backed. Key deterrents for investors include high CAPEX requirements, commoditised market offering, volatility of key raw material prices and fierce competition in tender processes. Nevertheless, factors that may appeal to investors include demand driven by the ongoing electrification and ageing power grid infrastructure in Europe.
