The city of Houma, Louisiana is facing a critical issue caused by rising salt water levels. This problem has been brought to light by the closure of the Houma water treatment plant due to high salt content in the surrounding area. Water is running low. There are substantial risks looming on the horizon for farming and even drinking needs. At the same time big food seems to continue running business as usual in transactional mode. Commodity shortages driven by draughts are becoming new normal. However the industry is still more busy with fines and allocations than actually facing a major problem - water is running low. Lidl in Germany bought few years ago largest water bottling company with their own wells. Mississippi River is at lowest levels in last 10 years and continues to fall. Colorado River has declined 20% last few decades. Purchasing and destroying farmland just to secure water rights is becoming lucrative business. Way more profitable than growing tomatoes. There is completely new approach needed of increased vertical integration and strategic partnerships between large food operators with vision and similar set of values. Independent farmers or cooperatives don’t stand a chance left on their own… #retaildemocratization

Sometimes, our clients will ask us to recover the cost of clearing blockages or repairing sewers from food service establishments. These tend to be food businesses that knowingly run their day-to-day operations while ignoring advice to reduce the amount of fat, oil, and grease (FOG) they discharge into the sewers. Or they've caused a significant problem on the sewer network that's sometimes affected a community. Section 111 of the Water Industry Act 1991 makes it a criminal offence to block or damage the sewer network. Unfortunately, it takes a stick – rather than a carrot – to change the daily kitchen practices of a few. #Hospitality #SewerBlockages #WaterIndustry

Single-use packaging litter is recorded on up to 66% of our streets. There are policies and regulations being brought forward which may have the potential to ensure that those that put the packaging on the market take responsibility for paying to help clear it up and, ultimately, prevent it. This is called Extended Producer Responsibility for Packaging (pEPR), and we want to provide evidence that this is needed so that the responsibility also includes dealing with litter that ends up on the ground. We need more data on the source of the items we find, and the numbers being littered to ensure litter on the ground is included in pEPR regulations and there is future financial support for those, from volunteers to duty bodies, who keep our country clean and tidy. Can Gouda Stall a Sinking Future? I was recently interviewed by Nina Siegal of the New York Times about the future of Gouda in the context of the rising sea level and subsiding soil. The oldest part of the city center subsides at a rate of about 3 to 6 millimeters each year, while newer parts sink by 1 to 2 centimeters a year. In order to tackle the problem, Gouda is spending more than $22 million a year on water mitigation efforts, such as daily maintenance, repairs, system upgrades and pipe replacements. This is expected to increase exponentially. That means that we need to find new solutions, because the solutions we’ve always used are not future proof. Just continuing to pump water out isn’t practical, because eventually it will become too expensive. There is no other Delta area in the world that is so well protected, but also which is so vulnerable. The lack of urgency among Dutch water engineers is annoying. Perhaps we need some kind of disaster in the next 20 years, which would not surprise me. Maybe only then people will respond. Evidence of water creep is everywhere in Gouda. On the Turfmarkt, the water rises to just inches from the top of the canal walls. The water lilies, blooming on the lily pads that dot the water, are just about at street level. Buildings in the old center face frequent flooding, which suffuses the quaint alleyways with sewage water. Cellars regularly become inundated and must be pumped out, while mildew creeps into walls and cracks their plaster surfaces. Some of the oldest houses have no foundations, and more than 1,000 are built on wood piles, which can rot when there is too much ground moisture. There are many houses in the oldest part of town that have their feet, so to say, in the water. A lot of the cellars are filling with water regularly. In my future projections the Green Heart will turn into the Blue Heart, which will mean that the Gouda region will be inundated, where we might live on the water, in floating districts and eventually floating cities. Moving with the water will be the guiding principle for the Netherlands, while reinforcing our water defence structure simultaneously. https://lnkd.in/eJF5s4cF

And yet another article regarding the every worsening water shortage in the western US. I find it interesting that the same problem keeps getting discussed with no solutions while everyone postures and works to protect their local area. Meanwhile a simple solution of halving the annual replacement rates of dairy cows would save millions of acre-feet of water annually. Halving replacement rates simply gets the dairy industry back to where it was 70 years ago before modern milking equipment screwed up the milking process resulting in cows slaughtered after just two years of milking. https://lnkd.in/gt5eQ3Y7
