The first step is to demystify and destigmatize the trades, making them attractive career options for young people. This involves creating awareness campaigns that highlight the high #jobsatisfaction, good pay, entrepreneurial opportunities, and #workflexibility associated with these roles. By partnering with educational institutions, companies can introduce students to the various opportunities within the #skilledtrades through workshops, #careerfairs, and hands-on experiences. Additionally, investing in high school programs dedicated to #tradeeducation can significantly impact the perception and interest in these careers. #Apprenticeships are another key component. Paid apprenticeship programs make it feasible for young people to enter the #workforce without financial strain. This approach ensures that new entrants are well-prepared and can gradually fill the gap left by #retiring workers. #Retaining skilled tradespeople requires competitive salaries, benefits, and a positive work environment. Organizations should focus on #successionplanning and capturing #institutionalknowledge before it walks out the door. Implementing cross-functional training and #upskilling programs can help current employees advance in their careers, contributing to higher job satisfaction and #employeeretention. Lastly, businesses should advocate for policies that support apprenticeships and #vocationaltraining. Engaging with policymakers and industry leaders to promote these initiatives can help create a more robust pipeline of skilled workers.

We seem to be stuck in the idea that fixing the shortage in the skilled trades is a marketing problem. If we just made people aware of the opportunities, the shortage would disappear. I don't think that's correct, because the marketing problem has largely been solved. The bigger issue right now is that there's a matching problem from college to apprenticeship in local communities. We cover this in more detail in our blog, take a look if you're interested. https://lnkd.in/gnbWGs97

I believe there is an opportunity to help resolve the housing crisis and benefit small business and the massive skills shortage. It would require more work from the government and may drive costs up a little as well but: If we gave a small business 10 homes a year to build for instance, they would have guaranteed work, this would give them confidence to put on full time employees. Some of these employees would be apprentices. if you're in the industry you know we have a skills shortage. More work for small business, greater employment opportunities for apprentices, more people participating in trades and becoming qualified help resolve the skills shortage. Big builders can't do this nor will they train them to do a proper job. The benefits to this would be: more stability for small business more apprentices leading to more qualified trades better quality homes being built benefits to local economy and community (small local business supports local community) There will be increased cost to building lot more work for the government to manage Thoughts? #housing #government #trades #home #house #Victoria

The CITB has revealed that the industry needs to hire an additional 50,000 staff annually. While this might seem like a daunting figure, it only represents 13.6% of school leavers, making this survey an encouraging sign for the industry. As a recruiter, I understand the impact of the current staffing crisis on my clients, and it's undoubtedly one of the worst times I've seen in the past 20 years. While it's not a short-term fix, there's hope for the future if the government - whether it's red or blue - commits to improving apprenticeships. At Barker Ross Recruitment, we've spent the past 30 years building trust with the Construction industry. So, if you're facing a staffing crisis, please don't hesitate to reach out to us.
