The Power of Transferable Skills in Manufacturing The manufacturing sector is ripe with opportunity, but are we overlooking the potential lying within transferable skills? It's time to think out of the box when hiring! The skills gap in manufacturing is a widely acknowledged issue. But what if I told you that there are countless prospective employees with transferable skills that could prove invaluable in this context? Perhaps they don’t have ‘manufacturing experience,’ but what about their abilities in problem solving, project management, or quality control from other sectors? By focusing too narrowly on field-specific experience, we might miss out on a diverse pool of talent. These individuals can bring fresh perspectives and strategies to improve efficiency and productivity. Let's break the mold and look beyond just traditional qualifications. So next time you’re hiring for your manufacturing team, cast your net wider and consider transferable skills. After all, diversity breeds innovation - and isn't that what manufacturing progress is all about?

CEO @ Qualtivate- consultancy helping life sciences to elevate quality management maturity, ensure regulatory compliance, and deploy innovative technology solutions.
The biggest fear we have as quality managers? It's an absolute confidence-killer... It's stopped people from: - Collaborating with other departments - Advocating for necessary resources - Seeking feedback during QMR - Addressing quality issues in open - Taking calculated risks based on data - Implementing continuous improvement - Experimenting with new technologies - Questioning “status quo” in quality - Thinking beyond regulatory compliance - Speaking up about potential risks - Admitting when a process isn't working Do you know what that is? The greatest fear we have as quality managers is: *drum roll...* 😱 The fear of being wrong We'll do all we can to avoid admitting we've failed: - Hiding mistakes to avoid repercussions - Blaming external factors for quality issues - Ignoring early warning signs of quality problems - Avoiding necessary process changes due to fear of disruption The worst part? All that does is hinder our ability to ensure patient safety and product quality. It undermines public health and trust in our industry. Everyone faces failure. Everyone is afraid of failing. The quality managers you admire? They embrace failure, learn from it, and grow. ---- P.S. What is your biggest fear as a quality manager?

What happens when your team lacks the necessary Quality Control/Assurance training and skills? This challenge can be daunting, but it's not insurmountable. Here’s how you can navigate this situation and ensure your products maintain high standards. • Implement Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs): Break down each process into detailed steps, ensuring clarity and comprehensiveness. Continuously review and update SOPs to reflect changes and improvements. • Invest in Targeted Training: it's essential to understand what specific training is needed. Start by evaluating your current processes and identify the gaps in your team's knowledge. This could involve reviewing the types of errors that frequently occur. Once you've pinpointed these areas, you can begin to seek out resources or training programs that specifically address these issues. • Conduct Peer Reviews and Audits. Even in the absence of formal training, peer reviews and internal audits can help identify gaps and areas for improvement. Encourage Cross-Functional Reviews. Teams from different departments reviewing each other’s work can provide fresh perspectives and also schedule regular internal audits to ensure adherence to quality standards and SOPs. • Embrace a Quality-First Culture. Build a culture that prioritizes quality. When everyone from top management to entry-level employees values quality, it becomes ingrained in the organization’s DNA. This cultural shift can be initiated by Leadership Advocacy. Leaders should consistently emphasize the importance of quality in all communications and actions. Quality is a journey, not a destination. Every step taken towards improving quality processes and skills is a step towards long-term success. What other strategies can you implement in your team to overcome skill gaps to uphold high product standards effectively? Let me know in the comment section.
