What is the best first-line treatment for acute classic mania? This video discusses the optimal pharmacotherapy for acute classic mania in bipolar disorder. It compares the efficacy and advantages of lithium, second-generation antipsychotics, and valproate. Should valproate still be considered a first-line treatment for mania? https://lnkd.in/dgcCQ2XG #Mania #lithium #Bipolar #valproate

The Gut Microbe-Derived Extracellular Vesicles-Mitochondria Axis in Mental Disorders Seyed Davar Siadat, Pasteur Institute of Iran, presented online data on the interplay between gut microbiota-derived extracellular vesicles (EVs) and mitochondrial function in relation to mental health disorders. Key Insights: 🔹 The gut microbiota forms intricate connections with various body systems, including the gut-brain axis, impacting psychiatric and neurological health through multiple pathways. 🔹 Bacterial EVs are capable of crossing the intestinal barrier, influencing brain function, and potentially contributing to neurodegenerative conditions like Alzheimer's disease. 🔹 Dysbiosis can increase harmful EVs and pathogenic bacteria, compromising gut integrity and leading to neurological disorders, underscoring the significance of the microbiota-mitochondria axis. #TargetingEVs #microvesicles #extracellularvesicles #microbiota #mitochondria #mentalhealth #neurodegeneration

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗛𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗻𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗕𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝗖𝗮𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝗗𝗲𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻? https://lnkd.in/dPyvRR_c For decades, the best drug therapies for treating depression, like SSRIs, have been based on the idea that depressed brains don’t have enough of the neurotransmitter serotonin. Yet for almost as long, it’s been clear that simplistic theory is wrong. Recent research into the true causes of depression is finding clues in other neurotransmitters and the realization that the brain is much more adaptable than scientists once imagined. Treatments for depression are being reinvented by drugs like ketamine that can help regrow synapses, which can in turn restore the right brain chemistry and improve whole body health. In this episode, John Krystal, a neuropharmacologist at the Yale School of Medicine, tells Steve Strogatz about the new findings in mental health research that are revolutionizing psychiatric medication.

One important lesson about depression is that it's not a sign of weakness. It's a serious medical condition that affects the mind and body. It's crucial to seek help and support when dealing with depression, just as you would for any other health issue. Depression is complex and can be caused by a variety of factors, including genetics, brain chemistry, life events, and other medical conditions. Understanding that depression is a real illness and seeking appropriate help and treatment is crucial for managing it effectively. Our bodies need time to "take out the trash" that's the rest and digest parasympathetic system in the body. Imagine if we never allowed time to clean up our home environment, what happens. Science is diving deeper into the importance of our parasympathetic response in contrast to our #AdrenalineRush world (sympathetic "fight or flight response" that's left turned on), revisiting even ancient healing practices that respect #homeostasis Scientists at the University of Utah Health have identified specific parts of the brain in mice that appear to be involved in #anxiety like behaviors, including #OCD, where the brain cells called #microglia -- the brain’s #cleanup crew -- clear away microorganisms or other debris that has accumulated. These microglia are now drug targets. Psychotropic drugs, like antipsychotics or antidepressants and #nootropics are often described in ways they effect neurotransmitters -- mainly #dopamine and #serotonin at the neurons (electrical + chemical pathways of the brain). Microglia, however, are the immunological/inflammatory cells in the brain and have been to correlated with psychiatric disorders. Many natural substances claim to have this effect of #detox but let's look at the evidence, and not over do it the attempt at "cleaning" either. #Pharmacists can take a lead on educating patients in this #buyerbeware market, especially on combining any #dietarysupplements with #prescriptiondrugs for #mentalhealth #translationalmedicine #drugdevelopment #drugsinsport #medicationsafety #drugsafety https://lnkd.in/gcSbhxWE https://lnkd.in/g-3NXvfb https://lnkd.in/gGtrRgYC

According to much research, enzymes make up around 49% of the targets that cross-talk with CBD. Various transports make up another 20% and ion channels and receptors make up another 15% respectively, all of which interact with CBD in complex ways. Some conditions that appear to benefit from biochemical cross-talk with these targets include neurodegenerative disorders, pain, epilepsy, movement disorders, addiction, psychosis and anxiety. Following are a few molecular targets and their benefits when activated by CBD. To learn more about Molecular Targets and CBD, read the full article - https://lnkd.in/gnV8Dipj
