Finalists announced for CJF Jackman Excellence Award TORONTO, April 23, 2024 /CNW/ - The Canadian Journalism Foundation (CJF) is proud to announce its shortlists for the CJF Jackman Awards for Excellence in Journalism, honouring news organizations that embody exemplary journalism and have a profound positive impact on the communities they serve. Finalists are recognized in two categories: large and small media. Through this prestigious award, the CJF has since 1996 recognized news organizations that embrace ideals of journalistic excellence – originality, courage, independence, accuracy, social responsibility, accountability and diversity. "Last year, Canadian news organizations – large and small, new and old – provided their audiences with stories that helped shape both the country and its communities," says jury chair Christopher Waddell, professor emeritus at Carleton University's School of Journalism. "Our finalists have explored a broad range of subjects – climate, healthcare, governance, hate crimes, Indigenous issues, government scandals involving elections tampering, healthcare, COVID-19 spending, and land development. "At a time when journalism and news organizations are being besieged from all sides about what they cover and how they cover it, it is encouraging to see the quality and depth of reporting all these stories feature -- ample evidence that despite the external pressures there remains a sound foundation for Canadian journalism to build on for the future." Despite online-only news orgs having been eligible for 15 years now, newspapers dominated among Pulitzer Prize finalists—until 2024, when more online-native outlets were recognized than newspapers, writes Joshua Benton of Nieman Journalism Lab. On Monday, the 108th edition of the Pulitzer Prizes was announced. In some ways, the winners and finalists were familiar: important investigations, incisive commentary, tremendous photography. But the list of honorees also highlighted three major ongoing shifts in American journalism: - The best works of journalism are increasingly produced by just a few high-end institutions. - The decline in local and regional newspapers has pushed online-native outlets to the forefront. - The work historically performed by newspapers is increasingly done by other forms of media. There are two ways to look at this broader shift at the highest levels of award-winning journalism. An optimist would look at the unprecedented excellence from online news outlets, especially at the local level, and see signs of tremendous hope. A pessimist would see the shrinking pool of finalist-worthy newspapers and rue the continuing spiraling of the newsrooms that are, in most communities, still the single largest producers of journalism. Bring daily local news to our community, free of charge. We recognized that although there are several news outlets serving our area, their focus is primarily on national news while ignoring hyper-focused local news. With this in mind, Thomas Hyslip started the Tega Cay Sun in June 2023. Launched as an online publication, a printed paper entered circulation starting in October 2023. The online version is updated daily while the monthly printed version is available in several locations throughout Tega Cay. Delivery to your door is also an option with home delivery.

🪅 The Marshall Project published the newest iteration of our Cleveland Judge Guide today with Signal Cleveland, a local partner without whom we wouldn't have gotten this work done. Link to the guide: https://lnkd.in/ezPkh2ny ♻️ The guide was developed in response to residents' questions about the judicial system and the challenges they face in finding reliable information about judges. We also solicited questions for candidates directly from Greater Cleveland residents. Their contributions and lived experience, along with the support of City Bureau Cleveland Documenter's program, made this civic tool possible. 🤔 I think that tools like this one are the future of journalism. It's not the only product that counts as journalism, of course; but it's the kind of public service that newsrooms can provide to support participatory democracy, and to empower folks by responding to their needs and their wants. As a newsroom, it's a privilege to have the resources to design and develop such a tool, and it took virtually every department in the org to make it a reality. 🏆 We also happened to win the 2023 Gather Award in Community-Centered Journalism by the Online News Association for the first iteration of this tool from Online News Association, which I take as a signal that this work's value is increasingly being recognized within the industry, work that some may deride as advocacy or non-journalistic.
