NiSource team members are passionate about supporting their communities through volunteering, and we celebrate those who go above and beyond. We call them our 'Super Volunteers.' Communications Specialist McKenna Gilbert, based in Pennsylvania, is our latest Super Volunteer. She extends her efforts beyond the workplace to make a meaningful impact on various charitable causes. At NiSource, McKenna is deeply involved in the company's employee resource groups. She volunteers at NiVets events, NiPride initiatives and supports the Columbia Gas of Pennsylvania and Columbia Gas of Maryland DE&I (diversity, equity and inclusion) Council. Outside of work, she dedicates her time to the Alzheimer's Association Greater Pennsylvania Chapter, Etna Garden Club, Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh and the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank. McKenna shares what inspired her to be a volunteer. "My parents demonstrated being active in the community and caring for all neighbors," she said. "I naturally adopted that mindset in my own life and seek opportunities to lift others and support organizations as best I can." McKenna finds immense gratitude and hope in helping others. During the early months of the pandemic, she volunteered at outdoor drive-through distributions organized by the food bank to safely meet the community's increased needs. Despite the cold and rainy conditions, the volunteers remained dedicated and the recipients were always thankful and kind. These experiences helped McKenna get through the pandemic and reminded her of the inherent kindness in people. Reflecting on her experiences, McKenna encourages others to prioritize volunteering, emphasizing its invaluable impact and the joy it brings. "Take time to volunteer," McKenna said. "Yes, everyone is busy, and lives go a thousand miles a minute, but prioritizing even just one day a month to volunteer is invaluable. It is also a great activity to do with friends, parents and kids. You won't be disappointed." Thank you for your commitment and dedication to helping your local community, McKenna.
