If we do not have a backup plan in place, it will be a huge difficulty for us in the coming years, as ground water levels fall and become polluted, and waterbodies face challenges in urban areas. It is crucial for all cities to prioritize sustainable water management practices to ensure a steady supply of water for residents. Implementing rainwater harvesting, recycling wastewater, and promoting water conservation measures are essential steps to address this growing issue. We have a very simple solution for overcoming this challenge: rain water harvesting. We can install RWH structures in schools, colleges, ITIs, and other buildings where we can collect rainwater and reuse it for irrigation, washing, cleaning, bathing, cooking, and other livestock needs. 𝐓𝐮𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐰𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐨 𝐠𝐨𝐥𝐝 Kasturba Nagar, Chennai, are composting their own wet waste instead of throwing it away! This innovative project, inspired by a similar one in Bengaluru, has resulted in a 30 kg reduction in daily waste production, three cross streets house commercial establishments. Of the 2,500 homes, nearly 1,500 do 100% source segregation of waste. I'm particularly impressed by the 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲-𝐝𝐫𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐧 𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐚𝐜𝐡, with residents taking ownership of their waste management. the project's success highlights the potential of decentralized composting solutions to address waste management challenges in urban areas. It's a model that could be replicated in other communities around the world, promoting sustainability and community engagement. Addressing the water crisis in Bangalore In Bangalore, the average household of four individuals consumes 20 liters of RO water daily. Shockingly, for every 20 liters of RO water produced, a staggering 80-100 liters of wastewater is discarded. However, by simply saving and storing this wastewater, we can effectively repurpose it for essential tasks such as dishwashing and floor cleaning. Just imagine, with a little effort, we can significantly reduce our water footprint. Personally, my household requires only two cans of stored wastewater for both dishwashing and floor mopping. It's a simple yet impactful change we can all make. I encourage fellow Bangaloreans to embrace these basic methods to safeguard our city's precious water resources. This #WorldEnvironmentDay, we are proud to share our progress in conserving natural resources and promoting sustainable community practices. Our collaborative water conservation and waste management efforts foster a healthier, more resilient environment for future generations. The watershed and environmental conservation projects at Kolar, Hyderabad and Salem implemented by the S M Sehgal Foundation and Bala Vikasa Social Service Society, have significantly improved water storage, boosted agricultural productivity through silt distribution, regenerative horticulture while helping reduce overall water consumption through drip irrigation systems. Additionally, our project teams have educated farmers on scientific irrigation practices to ensure sustainable water usage. Under the waste management project, two 1250-litre capacity composters were installed to transform organic waste into valuable compost and encourage household waste segregation. To further proliferate awareness on waste management, a vibrant mural has been painted on the Bangalore walls with the community's support, urging people to reduce, reuse, and recycle for a cleaner city.
