The House Natural Resources Subcommittee on Water, Wildlife and Fisheries recently held a legislative hearing on four key bills supported by NMMA and the recreational boating industry, including H.R.8704 – a bill that would delay the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) harmful proposed speed restrictions for boats 35-65 feet through 2030 and rightly invest in technologies that better protect marine mammals. Unsustainable fishing practices can have significant and long-lasting negative impacts on marine ecosystems and the societies that depend on them. 🦀🐬🐠🌊 #SDG14, pledges to “effectively regulate harvesting and end overfishing, illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing and destructive fishing practices and implement science-based management plans”. However, there remains a lack of internationally agreed definition for destructive fishing. To establish a consensus on the definition of destructive fishing and suggest means by which it can be monitored, UNEP-WCMC, along with partners Fauna & Flora , University of Cambridge and Cambridge Conservation Institute (CCI), has developed an illustrative monitoring framework. 🌱🌊 More than 1,500 critical coastal ecosystems will drown if we let the world warm above 2°C. Mangroves and tidal marshes protect coastlines worldwide. They support fisheries and wildlife, provide hazard mitigation, and clean up pollutants. A study found that most tidal marshes and mangroves could keep pace with current rates of sea level rise, around 2–4mm per year, but they can't be pushed any further. What is the logic of this decision? Who does it help? What economic reason (if that’s what you care about) is there for doing this? Does this legitimately change anything ? It seems we have a government making decisions with very little forward thinking or analysis of the consequences.
I’m lucky enough to have had four visits to the subantarctic islands that is a sanctuary for the spectacular NZ sea lion, or rāpoka. With a population of just 10,000, they are the world’s rarest and feature on an international “red list” of endangered species. Marine advocates and conservationists are concerned about a recent, unexplained population drop - and that the Government’s response is to remove a backstop protection. https://lnkd.in/edcVTh5B

Bull kelp, the predominant species found along the southern third of Oregon shores, is one of the world’s fastest growers, and has helped protect the coastline from storms and supported local fisheries, tribal fishing and cultural practices. But over the past decade, according to new data, Oregon lost more than two-thirds of that kelp canopy. The culprit? Sea urchins. Research by marine ecologists Aaron Galloway and Sarah Gravem, with the University of Oregon and Oregon State University, show there is a possibility to restore and maintain healthy kelp forests. The same with NZ fur seals, and Hector’s dolphins. We give limits to allow fisheries to practise as usual, with most rules being simply voluntary anyway. This is a serious push towards extinction of so many apex creatures and I feel a huge sense of guilt for pushing for conservation for so many years, with large waves of progress…. And then this. How the heck do we conserve in this climate? And how the heck do we conserve, conservationists?
