Many thanks to Anna Butenko and her colleagues of the Legal and Regulatory Group of ENTSO-E for inviting me to give a presentation on the AI Act and its implications for TSOs! Some key take-aways: ⚡ For TSOs the most important part will be the provisions for high-risk AI systems, specifically in the critical infrastructure area (Art. 6(2); Annex III, point 2). There is only one use-case so far: ‘safety components’ used in the management and operation of critical infrastructure. The question of what is (not) a safety component in practice remains open for interpretation. ⚡ Other uses of AI by TSOs in their role of system operators would in principle not be covered by the AI Act (e.g. AI systems used in the management and operation of infra that are not safety components; AI systems used for the optimization of electricity market) Question: should they be? This presentation was based on my research for the MegaMind project and a paper that I wrote together with Merel Noorman on the significance and shortcomings of the #AIAct in the electricity sector - it is currently under review, so stay tuned!
