New coastal ocean projects across Gulf of Mexico states are getting under way thanks to federal funding support through the Inflation Reduction Act, which is supporting the equitable service delivery and modernization of the U.S. Integrated Ocean Observing System (IOOS) Regional Associations, including GCOOS. The total $101.5 million in IRA funding across the 11 Regional Associations through 12 awards is supporting ongoing data collection in U.S. ocean, coastal and Great Lakes waters and the development of infrastructure and tools that help make the data accessible to the public. Initially $5 million in project support is coming to Gulf of Mexico states via GCOOS, said Executive Director Dr. Jorge Brenner. “The IRA funding will help GCOOS fill observing gaps and expand asset networks and projects across Gulf states to support coastal resilience,” he said. “The new support nearly doubles our annual federal funding and will provide much-needed capital to help fulfill our Strategic Plan and GCOOS Build-Out plan goals.” Read more https://lnkd.in/ekRrWuz9

📑 Note this event in your agenda, 5th June 10h20-10h40 #Speech🎤 at the National Defense Academy of Austria given by Thomas Seltsam #Measureproject #PSCE #Spring #Conference #Wien . He graduated in Integrated Safety and Security Management, and he has over 25 years of experience managing exercises for disaster response and emergency preparedness. Hence, he will share his experience with the whole of you, explaining how 🔍 to shape tomorrow’s response training 🚣♀️ 🏄♀️ . His speech will support the Measure project. To date, there are no uniform methods or tools for evaluating the findings of exercises in Austria. Usually, evaluators monitor exercise participants and record their impressions on checklists and questionnaires. Despite the high expenditure of resources in the evaluation, results are hardly comparable and subjective by default, as the evaluation staff can only record their subjective impressions 🙄. With MEASURE 😉 - Monitoring Exercises using AI-Support for Reliable Evaluation - the project consortium consisting of universities and scientific institutions (University of Vienna, FH Technikum Vienna, Disaster Competence Network Austria), technical partners (BOC) and emergency responders (Firefighting Association of Styria, Fire Brigade of Pinkafeld, Austrian Red Cross) under the coordination of the Austrian Institute of Technology (AIT) set the goal to develop an intelligent, technical support tool for easier planning, implementation and evaluation of exercise scenarios for emergency services. This tool enables faster, more objective evaluation and more individualized feedback with higher 💹 validity 🙃 Remember, being part of this speech means gaining much more than 25 years of experience, because it means going beyond Seltman's experience. This is because today he has his feet in research and fieldwork, this means accessing horizons 💡 😍 that have not yet been offered in the field. That is why you should come. 🍃⛈️ We are working with the Queensland Fire and Emergency Services and the City of Gold Coast, with support from the Queensland Resilience and Risk Reduction Fund, to help reduce severe wind and tropical cyclone risk. The region has high population density and a major proportion of Queensland’s community infrastructure, with severe storms historically damaging older residential housing. When we began assessing the risks in South East Queensland, we were able to apply a rigorous, targeted approach that gave much more comprehensive results. Our experts then developed a picture of the extent of risk the area faces before working with the region’s decision makers to develop strategies to address these risks. With this assessment in hand, the City of Gold Coast was able to target the most effective ways to improve the city’s severe wind resilience. This assessment allows local government to really target the improvements that will have the most impact to help make their communities safer. We appreciate being able to impart our knowledge, science and expertise to local communities like the City of Gold Coast, who can put our work into practice to help keep people safe. Today was day 1 of 3 supporting the Metis Nation in its Emergency Management journey and supporting their citizens. Decolonizing Emergency Management is a priority for Hazardscape. As we look to the future of Canada and its Indigenous peoples, in the context of disasters, helping them to secure funding without conditions is a primary aspect of self-determination. The Metis Nation is a partner and resource that all non-Indigenous communities, with the provinces, territories, and federal government, should be engaging with in the development of their emergency management programming.

This is very interesting reading which highlights the relevance of my research topic of enabling community-led response. I really hope that serious attention is paid to the recommendations and warnings contained in this report, and that the New Zealand Emergency Management System can become "fit for purpose" for large-scale emergency events. "An inclusive, community-led emergency management model, grounded in legislation and supported by appropriate investment is needed. Local communities should be empowered, educated, and supported to build their own emergency resilience and readiness, including having suitable plans, supplies and assets. "
