The Story of A Legend: King Midas
Are you familiar with King Midas and his legendary ability to turn anything he touched into gold? In Greek mythology, King Midas symbolizes this extraordinary power.
In the realm of football, certain coaches have earned the moniker "King Midas" due to their exceptional success in leading their teams to unprecedented achievements. One such coach was Zinedine Zidane, who helmed Real Madrid from 2016 to 2021. Under his guidance, Madrid secured victories in the Champions League, European Super Cup, Spanish Super Cup, and Club World Cup. Zidane's remarkable unbeaten record in nine final matches across various competitions led the Spanish media, AS, to call him "the incarnation of King Midas."
Another noteworthy figure is Ottmar Hitzfeld, the coach of Borussia Dortmund. In his debut year, Hitzfeld propelled Dortmund to a league runner-up position, securing entry into the UEFA Cup zone and ultimately reaching the tournament's final in the 1992/93 season. Hitzfeld reached back-to-back Bundesliga championship titles for Dortmund in 1995. His success extended to Bayern Munich during his coaching tenure.
In the summer of 2008, Hitzfeld assumed the role of the national team coach for Switzerland. Transforming a previously struggling team into a formidable force, Hitzfeld instilled a philosophy that defeat is an opportunity for improvement. Switzerland emerged as a robust, efficient, and high-quality team under his leadership.
The realm of bureaucracy also boasts its own King Midas, exemplified by Abdullah Azwar Anas during his leadership in Banyuwangi. Anas successfully transformed Banyuwangi from a reputedly haunted area into a premier tourist destination in Indonesia. Moreover, he elevated the region's performance, once among the lowest in East Java, to be recognized as the most innovative area in Indonesia for several consecutive years.
As a discussant in the review of Anas's book titled "Creative Collaboration," I utilized King Midas as metaphor to elucidate Anas's remarkable achievements. How did he turn Banyuwangi into a golden success? Find out more in the following video review.

As a big F1 fan and business leader who has experience of improving culture in the businesses that I have worked in, this really resonates with me, I agree that Trust & Ownership are perhaps 2 of the most important tools that any leader can be given. A great watch ( even if not an F1 fan 🏎 )

Having been involved in the sports industry for more than a decade, I agree that accreditation cards only allow athletes access to fields of play and other official areas, while VIP guests can access certain VIP areas only. However, it's problematic when priority is compromised. If key personnel aren't accredited while family members are, there's clearly an issue. Ensuring the right people have access to the event should always be the top priority.
While he is correct that VIPs can bring family members, it's concerning that a crucial person was left out of the contingent. Should leadership strictly follow the rules, or is there room to bend them? We need to reevaluate the system to prevent such oversights in the future.
