🌟 Citius, Altius, Fortius 🌟 The Paris Olympic Games have officially begun! From July 26 to August 11, 2024, over 10,500 athletes from around the world will compete in 32 sports categories. With an event of this magnitude, swift resolution of sporting disputes is essential. To address this need, CAS has established two temporary offices in Paris during the Games and the 10 days leading up to them: 1️⃣ **CAS Ad Hoc Division**: Handles legal disputes arising during the Games. 2️⃣ **CAS Anti-Doping Division**: Adjudicates anti-doping matters. Both divisions are dedicated to ensuring fair play and upholding the Olympic spirit. This temporary tribunal has been a fixture at every Summer and Winter Olympics since 1996, providing prompt, high-quality dispute resolution services, with decisions often rendered within 24 hours for urgent cases. No.9 wishes all athletes the best of luck and hopes the arbitrators find plenty of free time to enjoy the venues! 😀 #Olympics #SportsLaw #CAS #Paris2024 #FairPlay #No9

Olympics and Paralympics: why should we believe the promises of positive legacy for host communities? With #Paris2024 about to start, stories emerge from Queensland that their bid included an a $1 billion upgrade of the Gabba stadium that was not supported by a business case. One of the problems with holding games organising committees (OCOG) to account for cost overruns and the legacies that remain (or not, like the legacy of cost blowouts), is that most OCOGs are rapped up within months of the event. Further, the past few events have seen political and social reshuffling that reduces the ability for post-event accountability of governments, bid committees and OCOGS (think Paris 2024 election, Beijing 2022 invasion of Ukraine, Tokyo 2020 COVID-19, Rio 2016 President impeached between events, Sochi 2014 invasion of Crimea...). Why should the voting public trust the budget estimates and legacy promises from those who bid for, and put on these wonderful events ? How can they increase their social license? #Olympiclegacies #Paris2024 #Brisbane2032 #sociallicense https://lnkd.in/eJVp8gtD

In the wake of doping controversies from the Tokyo Olympic Games, a new dispute has arisen at the Paris Games. Italy’s Olympic Committee (CONI) has filed a complaint regarding the decision in the gold medal match in which Hong Kong foilist Cheung Ka-long triumphed over Italy's Filippo Macchi. The president of CONI has publicly expressed strong dissatisfaction with the referees' decision, sparking debate due to the referees' origins from South Korea and Chinese Taipei - regions in proximity to Hong Kong. This situation prompts an important question: if a similar incident were to occur in a competition based in Hong Kong or the APAC region, what effective mechanisms would be in place to ensure a fair resolution of the dispute? In this article, Patrick Chan, Clement Chui and Able Au explore ways forward in driving the initiative for a dedicated sports arbitration system in Hong Kong to serve the needs in the APAC region. In the wake of the excitement (fatigue for some!) from the Paris Olympics, my team and I explore Hong Kong's potential to be a leading sports dispute resolution hub in the APAC region. Hong Kong is developing its own sports arbitration mechanism, potentially by establishing: its own centre (perhaps modelled after Switzerland’s Court of Arbitration for Sport); a Hong Kong branch of the China Commission of Arbitration for Sport; or a mechanism with existing institutions such as the HKIAC. Hong Kong has a unique edge over its APAC counterparts, as it is one of the most preferred seats for international arbitration; has an established common law framework; and has a range of reciprocal arrangements in arbitration with Mainland China. There is therefore no reason why the world city of Asia could not evolve to take on a leading role in sports arbitration. Rome wasn’t built in a day, as the saying goes, and with the Asian Games 2026 fast approaching, now is the time to expedite this evolution. With a wealth of sports-related disputes experience in Europe and the APAC region, Charles Russell Speechlys is here to support our clients to navigate complexities on this journey. Please reach out to me and my team Patrick Chan, Benoît Pasquier, LL.M., Ed Craig, Able A. if you have any questions. #charlesrussellspeechlys #sports #sportslaw #disputeresolution #internationalarbitration #olympics #sportsarbitration

🌟 Exciting times ahead for sports arbitration in Hong Kong and Asia! Following the recent controversies during the Tokyo Olympic Games, attention has shifted to Paris, where Italy’s Olympic Committee (CONI) has lodged a complaint over the gold medal match that saw Hong Kong's Cheung Ka-long clinch victory against Italy's Filippo Macchi. This incident raises a crucial point: if a similar dispute were to unfold in Hong Kong or the APAC region, how prepared are we to ensure a fair and efficient resolution? In a recently penned article, my colleagues Able Au, Clement Chui kand I delve into this pressing issue, advocating for a robust sports arbitration system tailored to the unique needs and challenges of the APAC sports community. It's time to establish clear and effective mechanisms to safeguard the integrity of our competitions and support athletes across the region! #SportsArbitration #FairPlay #Olympics #HongKong #APAC #IntegrityInSports #ConflictResolution #SportsLaw
