From Brixton to the basketball courts of the US and Europe, Justin Robinson's story is one of resilience, mentorship, and the transformative power of sport. 💪 His journey, marked by personal and professional triumphs that he is too humble to tell people about, reflects a deep commitment to using basketball as a force for positive change in young people's lives. 🏀 As someone who loves this sport and its potential, I'm inspired. Basketball too often falls off the agenda, despite being a truly globally relevant cultural platform; one that connects fashion, sport and music unlike any other - simply because we haven't figured out how to turn it in to a cash machine yet. 🤔 Don't let that stop your brand intervening to create a positive change in young people's lives. A 14 yr old tells us the problems in US Soccer 👇 What can we learn from a child that wants to ‘play freely’ that is told they can’t and must listen to their coaches idea of the game? Like most things in life it is all about finding balance. However, a common thing I see is that the game has became more about the coaches ego than it has about the players at youth level. Street soccer is not only acknowledged by a large majority of the greatest players of all time as the best way to learn but it is also the most fun. The great players are telling us it is the absence of the coach that is the secret ingredient to becoming great. The young players tell us it’s not fun when they hit 14 (75%). There is a new “cookie cutter cone drill culture” that is emerging in the US and we know it can make players better in a certain way but it is coaching everything that is unique out of them and will be one of the main reasons the US will continue to not develop creative players. Christian Pulisic is building street soccer fields around the US “to give players the opportunity to play without a coach.” Pulisic references his years spent in England when he was 7 years old as the reason he is the player he is. He describes his exposure to street football and how it changed him. Interesting? Modern street soccer needs to be based on the three tenets of: • Individuality • Flexibilty • Digitization How can we can change culture? I believe by bringing digital content of great players and deploying a street soccer approach into the coaching environment at scale would create a generation of magical individualistic players in the US. What do you think? Written and produced by myself as part of Global Street Soccer. #YouthSoccer ❤️⚽️🇺🇸

In this episode of the EvoToca podcast, coach Killian reflects on how playing soccer with older children during youth in France helps build toughness and resilience. This contrasts with the current generation of young players in the United States, who may be more sheltered and less exposed to physical play. We discuss the importance of allowing children to experience the physicality of the game without excessive intervention, emphasizing that overcoming challenges is crucial for character development. Our conversation shifts to coaching methodologies, particularly the differences between European and American approaches to youth soccer. European academies are highly competitive and treat young players with a level of seriousness akin to professional environments. In Europe, consistent practice, discipline, and repetition of basic skills are emphasized from a young age. Legends like Thierry Henry and Cristiano Ronaldo are cited as examples of players who achieved greatness through relentless practice and mastery of fundamentals. There is concern that many young American players lack this dedication, partly because they do not watch soccer regularly and are distracted by other interests. Emphasizing the importance of watching professional games, we argue that it helps players understand the sport better and develop a deeper passion for it. Individual skills such as dribbling and ball control in younger players before introducing passing and team tactics as they mature is more suitable for younger kids. Developing technical proficiency and confidence on the ball should be the primary focus in the early stages of youth development. Changes to improve soccer culture in the United States such as implementing a promotion and relegation system similar to that in European leagues could increase competitiveness and incentivize teams to perform better. We believe such structural changes, along with a shift in coaching philosophies and parental attitudes, could significantly enhance the development of soccer in America. #soccercoach #soccertraining #youthsoccer #soccerislife #ussoccer #footballcoaching #footballcoach

There's no shortage of basketball programs around the globe, but there's one that truly stands out - Whai Basketball. 🏀 Why am I so fascinated by them, you ask? Let's dive in. Whai Basketball, developed from the roots of whai.community, delivers an astounding holistic approach to basketball. They're not just about dribbling and scoring, they're building a community, connection, and character. Here's how: - Youth Development: Whai Basketball isn’t creating just athletes, they’re fostering the growth of young boys and girls into functioning adults, responsible community members with principles and values intact. - Skill Enhancement: They go beyond the standard drills. They're intrinsically focused on improving players' skills - both physically and mentally. - Community-Building: Whai isn't just a basketball program. It's a community builder. They're stitching together networks of parents, players, and mentors, creating a platform where everyone is welcome and everyone has a role to play. Now, this is where it gets interesting: 👉 They’re not just curating an inclusive sports culture, but they’re weaving stories of shared endeavours, triumphs, and even failures. The power of their program lies in celebrating collective achievement, NOT individual accolades. It's not about me, it's about us. How refreshing is that? I don't know about you, but that's a narrative I can get behind – sport as the means, not the end. 🙌 This is why Whai Basketball is winning. If you're a coach, a parent, a player, or an enthusiast, then this is a conversation you want to be a part of. Isn’t it time we reframe what success in basketball looks like? Whai Basketball is doing just that, one jump shot at a time. Now, let's talk – have you experienced community in a sports setup like this? What was your experience like? Feel free to connect and share. 👋 #sports #community #basketball #youthdevelopment #success

🌟 Embrace Fearlessness in Soccer 🌟 At the ACC Elite x Beast Mode Soccer camp in Virginia, I had the opportunity to share a vital message with our talented players: Play without fear. Often, young athletes play it safe, burdened by the fear of letting down coaches, teammates, or parents. This fear, rooted in ancient survival instincts, no longer serves us in the modern game. Fear was meant to protect us from dangers, but on the soccer field, it becomes a barrier. Too many players wait until their 20s or 30s to overcome this fear and truly excel. My message to our players was clear: start now. Be brave, take risks, and play freely. The most successful athletes are those who can conquer their fears and let their talents shine. At Beast Mode Soccer, we believe in developing not just technical skills, but also the mental strength to play confidently and fearlessly. Let’s encourage our youth to embrace this mindset and reach their full potential. #BeastModeSoccer #PlayWithoutFear #SoccerDevelopment #YouthAthletics #DavidCopelandSmith #ACCEliteCamp #LeadershipInSport #SoccerMindset #PlayerDevelopment

Founder: Experiential Communications | Communications trainer for researchers | Leading initiative focused on youth sports & character development | Author: "Reframing Career Success"
Did playing youth sports as a kid help instill leadership and character traits that have been useful in your career? This has been the case for me. Between 8th and 9th grade, I wanted to take my basketball shooting to the next level. I wrote on a paper various goals and made myself shoot and make different types of shots every day. Over time, I improved. To this day, I write out different work goals as a communications consultant. How about you? I worry many kids won't experience the leadership and character benefits that can be gleaned through youth sports because of ADULTS! Over the years, I've loved watching my kids compete in youth sports. Coaching their different teams has been a blast. But so many adults are ruining youth sports by overly focusing on short-term success (i.e. – the score of an eight year old’s Little League game) over the long-term character and leadership development that can propel a kid throughout their life. I set up a new Substack website that includes: 𝟏. 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐟𝐢𝐥𝐞𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐤𝐢𝐝𝐬 𝐰𝐡𝐨 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐝𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐢𝐧 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐡 𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐬. 𝟐. 𝐐𝐮𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬. 𝟑.
