Today, I had the chance to interview a candidate for an exciting role working with Cisco carrier-class devices. This job requires a detail-oriented professional—someone who can manage traffic from customers spanning the entire US, from East to West Coast and Hawaii without error. As I reviewed the resume, it was impressive on the surface: OSPF, BGP, IS-IS, Cisco Nexus hardware, Cisco ASR hardware, Cisco IOS, Cisco IOS XR, Cisco NX-OS—all the right technical skills. But then, I saw it... Typos in critical terms like "multicast" and "MAC address," and inconsistent capitalization when mentioning Juniper NetScreen. It made me think: How can I recommend someone for such a crucial role if they miss important details in their own resume? Always open... to new applicants and future coworkers to myself. At Axis we have some core values that we actively promote and try to hold on. My favorite one is "Always open". It can have many interpretations, but to me the meaning is that we should be open in a broad sense. Open to contacts, discussions, ideas. To allow the actual interaction to happen, to have an open mind and really listen. Although we have our own office (most of us anyway), the door should always be open. Throughout my working years, I have strived to really listen, be open to other ideas, and to be gentle (most time) when pushing my own ideas. Not only in personal development for both you and the colleague, but also for the company.
