Great question Joel Makower and Trellis Group - How does 'Scope 4' emissions help or hinder sustainability efforts? Enterprises such as Panasonic, Pacific Gas and Electric Company, and Schneider Electric are 'dipping their toes into the Scope 4 waters,' but should you? Although Scope 4 emissions are not part of the Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHG Protocol) (yet), this data grounds the abstract notion of a net zero transition and focuses the discussion on the collection of products, services, and interventions needed to 'avoid emissions' in the future. How does Scope 4 emissions help sustainability efforts? Scope 4 emissions help companies (and their investors) communicate and contextualize the positive impact their products or services can enable, both for users and the industry at-large. It answers the question "how does your solution help us achieve our net-zero goal?" How does Scope 4 emissions hurt sustainability efforts? I'd agree with Jacob Madsen from Persefoni's take - there certainly is a lot of potential for greenwashing and multiple ways to interpret the same data. Private companies dominated the list, comprising 70% of greenwashing cases." -RepRisk 2024 Greenwashing Study, ESG News, edie Notable examples of greenwashing litigation against public companies - such as ExxonMobil's active course cases in CT and CA, NY's active lawsuit against JBS, Oatly's $9.3M greenwashing settlement, and Vanguard's $12.9M penalty from ASIC - all underscore the new normal of 'the ESG performance (or lack thereof) of your supplier/borrower/partner-of-any-sort is your ESG performance (and associated liabilities).' So what can you do to mitigate these risks and capture more value? For Buyers/Lenders/Enterprise Procurement - Beyond conducting ESG due diligence at the company level, require third-party validation for the sustainability impacts of any products or services you are buying/funding. This will ensure any associated claims you make are derived from an objective assessment of the offering's effectiveness and rooted in science (not sales tactics).
