Today marks the start of Copenhagen Fashion Week , and whilst models get ready to take on the runways, we're learning how the event is taking on sustainability through their published Sustainability Requirements. 👕 With Minimum Standards listed on the Copenhagen Fashion Week website, we couldn't help but take note and share a couple that focuses on plastics and materials: 🟢'We do not utilise single-use plastic packaging backstage during fashion week but offer recyclable, recycled or repurposable alternatives' 🟢'At least 50% of our collection is either certified, made of preferred materials or new generation sustainable materials, upcycled, recycled or made of deadstock' With microfibres released into the water and air across various stages of textile production, the industry continues to play a leading role in the contribution of environmental damage. That's why it's encouraging to see fashion based events taking initiative and acting in a manner that actively promotes positive sustainable impact. Textiles are one of the fastest growing waste streams, with the 'fast fashion' industry using vast amounts of resources to create garments - many of which end up in landfill after very little use. With more than 25% of global carbon emissions set to come from creating textiles by 2050, it's clear that action needs to be taken. The Circular Fashion Innovation Network (CFIN) is a new Government-funded circular fashion programme aiming to facilitate and lead the development of a circular fashion ecosystem within the UK. Through my experience in the recycling industry, I will be supporting CFIN as part of the Advisory Board to increase recycling capacity within an industry that has huge potential to optimise resources. By introducing take back schemes and by working with designers to improve the recyclability of textiles produced, we can increase the amount of materials being recycled, meet our circularity goals and reduce carbon emissions. #CFIN #TextilesRecycling #CircularEconomy #OptimisingResources #EcologicalTransformation

On #EarthDay, I am pleased to share our new article on just transition for decarbonisation in textile and clothing supply chains. Thank you, remake.world and Ayesha Barenblat for having us. Despite sustainability-oriented policies, pledges and commitments, governments, industries and companies fail to take decisive and inclusive climate action. Prof. Donna Marshall and I explain that supply chain decarbonisation, avoiding and reducing carbon emissions by phasing-out fossil fuels, is vital, but it should not be done in isolation. Environmental actions result in intergenerational societal consequences. While we need to take urgent steps to decarbonise the fashion industry, we need to ensure this happens in a fair, inclusive and equitable way, or we could be creating more issues into the future. Framing innovation as the solution, the fashion industry cannot meet emission reduction targets by sticking with their usual practices. Just transition principles are needed but these must be understood as context-specific interventions. Each supplier in each production country needs specific and individual means to reduce emissions in a fair, inclusive and equitable way. We suggest a number of pathways at three levels for decarbonizing fashion supply chains in socially fair ways. These ideas are built from the lived experiences of suppliers’ managers and workers to ensure that just transitions do not become a window-dressing exercise characterized by vague corporate commitments and that this becomes an inclusive and holistic action plan for the benefit of everyone in the fashion industry. Happy #EarthDay! Did you know that the fashion industry is responsible for about 10% of global carbon emissions – as much as the entire European Union, and more than all international flights and shipping combined? In our lifetimes, we have seen this shift hugely — by 2014, compared to 2000, we were buying 60% more clothes and keeping our clothes for just half the time. The Ellen Macarthur Foundation estimates that a truckload of abandoned textiles is dumped in landfills or incinerated every second. In fact, 85% of all textiles go to the dump each year. Washing synthetics like polyester releases the equivalent of 50 billion plastic bottles a year into the oceans. Plastic fibers and toxic dyes are leaching into our waters. Overall, fashion is responsible for 20% of all industrial water pollution. It’s up to us to decide what we do now and in the future. Let’s work together to make our threads last. Let’s invest in circular fashion: thrifting, reusing, holding on to our own clothes for as long as they last — not as long as they are trendy. (And they'll be trendy again if we hang on long enough!) As an industry, we talk about the need to transition away from the current linear system towards a circular model that minimizes waste and maximizes resource use by keeping products and materials in use for as long as possible. This involves designing clothes to last longer, recycling materials to create new garments, and prioritizing repair and reuse over disposal. But as the fashion industry embraces this circular vision, what does this new system look like, and WHO gets to define it? Who’s at the table when we think about fashion’s circular future, and who’s not? 👀 Historically, discussions on circularity have been dominated by voices from the Global North, especially Western countries. However, it’s essential to acknowledge that the fashion industry’s impacts are global. Therefore, the perspectives and experiences of those in the Global South, where much of the production occurs and the waste ends up, must also be central to the conversation. 💯 During the Sustainable Fashion Forum conference last year, Nicole Bassett, co-founder of The Renewal Workshop and Circularity Lead at Bleckmann, emphasized the need to reimagine the concept of circularity in a way that doesn’t perpetuate harmful legacies or exclude marginalized voices. 💫 Fashion’s approach to circularity needs to be inclusive. True progress toward sustainability and equity can only be achieved by confronting and dismantling systemic injustices. Sustainable Practices in Fashion to Combat Global Carbon Emissions.... The UN's assertion that fashion contributes 8-10% of global carbon emissions underscores the industry's urgent need for sustainability, especially given that much production occurs in developing countries. To reduce environmental pollution in these regions, strict sustainability regulations should be enforced, promoting eco-friendly materials and low-impact production techniques. Collaborations among local governments, NGOs, and fashion brands can establish guidelines for waste management and pollution control, while educating local workers enhances accountability. Additionally, adopting sustainable practices across the supply chain—such as using renewable energy, prioritizing local manufacturing, and leveraging innovative technologies—can help the fashion industry significantly reduce its carbon footprint and environmental impact.

A circular economy is the only solution that can match the scale of the global textile waste problem. Two weeks ago we announced The Fashion ReModel at Global Fashion Agenda’s Global Fashion Summit in Copenhagen. This new demonstration project is working towards making circular business models mainstream through business-led action. Alongside keeping products in use for longer through circular business models, we need a comprehensive and coordinated framework of committed voluntary industry action combined with dedicated policy action, including EPR policy. Here, the Foundation’s Senior Policy Officer Valérie Boiten explains how Extended Producer Responsibility policy (EPR) is a necessary part of the solution to build a circular economy for textiles, and accelerate progress to redesign the system. The circular economy in the most simple terms is the idea of keeping textiles in use longer. It also needs to consider the end of life of garments within a product lifecycle. Should manufacturers be held accountable for what happens to textiles after they are produced? Extended producer responsibility (EPR) is a waste and pollution management concept that encourages companies to design more sustainable and recyclable products and manufacturing processes. Process Engineering friends, I am curious about your thoughts on the EPR concept. If manufacturers designed with the end in mind, would our waste problem be less of a problem? Your thoughts? 💭 🧐
