The creation of UNESCO came in response to the horrors of the #Second #World #War and particularly the crimes perpetrated by #Nazi #Germany and its collaborators. UNESCO’s goal, as its Constitution states, is to strengthen the “intellectual and moral solidarity of mankind” against “ignorance and prejudice [and] the doctrine of the inequality of men and races”. This “doctrine” had resulted in the loss of millions of lives and included the attempt to murder every single Jew in the grasp of Nazi Germany.The mandate of UNESCO is embedded in this history. This is why #education about the #holocaust in particular, and education about the history of #genocide and mass atrocities, stands at the heart of UNESCO’s efforts to foster peace and mutual understanding. For UNESCO, quality education, based on knowledge of the social and political dynamics that can lead to mass violence, is fundamental to building stronger societies, resilient to violence and hatred. Today, on April 23rd, we commemorate the visionary leader Mustafa Kemal Atatürk and celebrate the spirit of National Sovereignty and Children's Day. Atatürk truly believed in the power of education and the importance of nurturing the young minds of the nation. He famously said, "The new generation will be created by them. It is our duty to raise children with the awareness that today’s children are the future’s adults.” April 23rd is a day dedicated not only to celebrating the establishment of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey in 1920; but also, to our children, who are the architects of our future. Unfortunately, humankind has still substantial opportunity to create a society where every child has access to quality education and opportunities for growth, regardless of background or circumstance. We must stop fighting each other (another quote from Atatürk : Peace at Home, Peace in the World) , and we must relentlessly invest in the education and well-being of our children. We must empower them to become leaders, innovators, and compassionate citizens who will shape a brighter tomorrow. A brighter tomorrow is only achievable when we commit to nurturing and supporting our youth. Let's unite in our efforts to create a world where every child's dreams can flourish. National Sovereignty and Children’s Day (“Ulusal Egemenlik ve Çocuk Bayramı”) is on April 23, a public holiday in Türkiye with a difference. Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the first president of the country, dedicated April 23 to all the world’s children — keepers and creators of the future. The day also commemorates the dawn of a new Turkish Republic in 1923 after the fall of the Ottoman Empire. Most probably, Türkiye is the only country where children are the official symbols of national pride and progress.. Let me remind you what Atatürk was strongly saying and believing: ‘Children are the assurance of our future and our joy of life. 👨👩👧👧 International Day of Conscience 5 ِApril 2024 👨👦 🌏 The Universal Declaration of Human Rights preamble states that "disregard and contempt for human rights have resulted in barbarous acts which have outraged the conscience of humankind, and the advent of a world in which human beings shall enjoy freedom of speech and belief and freedom from fear and want has been proclaimed as the highest aspiration of the common people." 🌎 Moreover, article 1 of the Declaration states that "all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights and are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood." 🌐 The promotion of a culture of peace is a worthwhile objective of the international community. It inspires activities at so many levels and in so many regions in order that the culture of peace will gradually take on the characteristics of a global movement. 🤲 JOIN US. Happy Centennial Anniversary to the Turkish Republic! (Cumhuriyetin 100. Yili Kutlu Olsun!), that is what we celebrated with the members of the EY Turkish US/UK Community pictured below. This is not only a milestone for anyone with a Turkish background but also for any citizen of any country rooting for a pluralistic democratic system in the world. We should all reflect on the facts that Ataturk, the founder of the republic and a genius statesman of the 20th Century, granted rights to women to vote and to be elected in 1930 (years ahead of several Western Democracies), or transformed the way modern Turks write/read using the Latin alphabet giving broad access to literacy, among many other reforms and in that way, he had offered all emerging countries a playbook in humanitarian progress and change management. Yet today, the Turkish democracy (or any other democracy US or other in the world) is an ongoing experiment. Not maintaining it has a hefty price in face of autocratic, non-secular, ultra-nationalistic, oppressive and racist regimes which are still aplenty in the world regardless of whether they are promoted by the ultra-right or ultra-left. Ataturk as a soldier and a liberator of a new republic who fought in many wars understood the unique value of peace for humanitarian progress so let's conclude with one of his maxims: Peace in the nation and peace in the world.

In 1995, to mark the United Nations Year for Tolerance and the 125th anniversary of the birth of Mahatma Gandhi, UNESCO created a prize for the promotion of tolerance and non-violence: the UNESCO-Madanjeet Singh Prize. In 1996, the UN General Assembly adopted Resolution 51/95 proclaiming 16 November as International Day for Tolerance. This action followed the adoption of a Declaration of Principles on Tolerance by UNESCO's Member States on 16 November 1995. Among other things, the Declaration affirms that tolerance is neither indulgence nor indifference. It is respect and appreciation of the rich variety of our world's cultures, our forms of expression and ways of being human. Tolerance recognizes the universal human rights and fundamental freedoms of others. People are naturally diverse; only tolerance can ensure the survival of mixed communities in every region of the globe. What UNESCO does for Tolerance: Culture of Peace and Non-violence, Democracy and Global Citizenship, Fostering Rights, Inclusion and Non-Discrimination, Education transforms lives, and Freedom of Expression.
