The Adopt A Room partnership program allows you, your company, or your organization to be the sponsor of a guest room at one of our two Houses—Chestnut Street or Front & Erie. Your funding will support the housekeeping and maintenance of that room and thereby provide a clean and comfortable space for all the families who will stay in that room for a whole year. By partnering with our Adopt A Room program, you are doing more than making sure families have a safe place to sleep each night—as vital as that is. You are making it easier for children to get the treatment they need and have their families close by their side, every step of the way. You are eliminating many of the financial challenges that come with traveling long distances for medical care, so that parents can focus on what is most important—their child’s treatment and the wellbeing of their entire family.

Back to School ................... So children back to school (to coincide with final blast of Sun) which I guess means the start of the run to Chr.............. - you know that end of year thing. Anyway the back to school thing coincides with with the crumbling concrete issue - which we are surely only just at the start of. Luckily - for now - children's schools not impacted ... but this is surely going to spread like Japanese Knotweed ... it will be schools, courts, sports centres, hospitals, all to follow. Saw that #JimmyCarr was being cancelled (venue at risk of falling down as opposed to offending someone who attended a show and didn't expect to be offended 🤣 ). This is just the beginning. So the concrete takes the NHS of the front pages for a week, then no doubt it will be back and then we will head into conference season when #rishisunak and #kierstammer will beat their chests and tell us all how they can fix #brokenbritain. Anyway, becoming increasing disenchanted with the political system - probably not the thing to be said but - no one in government of whatever political colour have the balls to make the tough and correct decisions - and under the current system that simply is not going to change. Solution - its a solution but will never happen - matters such as Health, Infrastructure, Education need to be non party political. What needs to happen is representatives from the parties jointly agree a position and develop 25 year plans that whoever is in power has to deliver - and these plans are appropriately funded. Positions have to be agreed - how you do it I don't know - but it can't be a talking shop with no outcome - an agreed strategy is essential. So whats this got to do with crumbling concrete...my point is no government was ever going to stick their hands up and say we need to fix this at a cost of £Xm and thats down to you taxpayer - but thats a project over 25 years. So surprise surprise its now urgent and there is no alternative and we have to find the money now - and we know what happens to the price when something urgent. Anyway - have a good weekend all - no premier league this weekend so if your in the area come and watch #ColchesterUnited - we need the support and the points.

Bumper end to another packed week bookended by two even more bumper days. On Monday we held our quarterly all staff day at YMCA Kings Cross and it was great to see our growing team all in the same place together celebrating successes and sharing information on plans for the months ahead. Top of the agenda that day - and in all our Leadership and Board meetings at present - was managing demand this winter and how we best respond to the unprecedented levels of need we are seeing. Like the early days of Covid it’s got that ‘building the plane while you fly it’ feeling at the moment but there were some very helpful ideas - and a great sense of unity coming from the day. We are kicking off today hosting 10 senior lawyers from across the UK and globe for a breakfast and tour of the centre. I dare say the contrast to the Private Equity conference they’ve been at yesterday will be fairly stark. Then I’ll be with our new Head of Development, Chloe Rowbotham reflecting on a successful first week that has seen us land two news corporate partners (more on that next week), hold a successful fundraiser with Palatine and get approached to apply for a large gift. I dare say shes ready for a glass of wine. But the highlight of the week will be the youth-led ‘Great Bans Debate’ as young people from the centre hash out the rules around when those using the centre are given time out or in the more extreme cases, bans for lengths of time. As you’d imagine it’s a very nuanced conversation that has to balance the need for rules whilst also recognising the trauma, exhaustion and frustration that young people often walk through the door with. The best way to find that balance? Get the young people to reason it through. Can’t wait. Happy Friday all x

I loved watching this anniversary edition of our game, Compatibility, being played on the weekend by the I2N at The University of Newcastle accelerator cohort. The simple, image-driven mechanism where every player gets the same pack of image cards, works so well as an entertaining dinner party game -- and gave rise to our many #ccscards applications. The concept was created when I saw some research being done to test museum visitors' attitudes to ideas a museum had for a new exhibition. Visitors were given a pile of pictures cut-out from magazines and asked to find images that they thought showed the type of things they expected to see in the new exhibition. I recall that as I watched the people filing through these images, I was struck by their absolute concentration and obvious delight in finding suitable images to represent their point of view. What's more, people who had not been saying much started sharing ideas and even asking questions of others. I said to myself, there's got to be a game in this! What followed was several years of trial and error, prototyping, testing and trying to get game companies to take notice. In the end we started our own little company, Compatibility Pty Ltd and set out to market the game ourselves. As fate would have it, while meeting with the toy and game buyer for a major retail chain we were introduced to the MD of the well-known Australian games company, Crown & Andrews. In the meeting that followed, the game was accepted. From there, the game went around the world with Mattel into 12 countries and 5 languages, and 500,00 copies! Today, we are applying the common image communication concept we developed for Compatibility and CCS Cards to help solve the problem of social isolation in residential aged care. We are creating a mobile application, known as CARISA, that uses digital picture-based conversations and games to give carers and family members an easy way to have meaningful, measureable moments of connection with residents and loved ones. I have said it before, and I will say it again -- connection never gets old!

What do pancakes have to do with success? We cracked open our 15th Anniversary edition of our board game, Compatibility to play with our I2N Accelerator peeps on Saturday night and had a lot of laughs! When Kate Maslen put down the stack of pancakes for the topic: 'success' - we just had to ask, 'why?' 'Well, look at them - success!' Love it! Another joyful reminder of the conversation, and laughs, you can have when you use images to prompt a response. That's why we're now taking this concept into aged care. If you have anyone in residential aged care, you may have found that visits can be difficult. What do you talk about? Our aim is to bring more joy, more laughs and more conversation into aged care! Stay tuned for more updates ... CARISA is coming soon! And thanks to all our fabulous I2N at The University of Newcastle Accelerator cohort for your support, fun and friendship along the way!
