Here are 4 essential questions to help nonprofits and NGOs prepare themselves for crisis scenarios: 1️⃣ Who needs our support the most, and where are they located? 2️⃣ What are our most critical services? 3️⃣ Which third-party providers do we rely on? 4️⃣ How can we secure these services in-house or find reliable alternatives? Philip Bendheim, Yad Sarah's Board of Trustees Director, explores how answering these questions has helped Yad Sarah since October 7 on eJewishPhilanthropy: https://lnkd.in/dRsxUYWs

Big news for nonprofits receiving or seeking federally-funded grants The federal Office of Management and Budget (OMB) unveiled significant improvements to the grantmaking rules governing federal funding that many nonprofits earn going into effect October 1, 2024. Noteworthy improvements in the newly updated OMB Uniform Guidance include that the de minimis indirect cost rate that all levels of governments using federal funds must pay to every grantee increase to 15% (up from 10%) unless the organization has a higher federally negotiated indirect cost rate, Notices of Funding Opportunities (requests for proposals) will be streamlined and simplified, the Single Audit threshold will increase to $1 million, and more. The reforms also promote equity through removing barriers and ensuring greater outreach to communities that have traditionally had limited access to grants programs. Small and local nonprofits face unique challenges, including limited resources and funding, which restrict their ability to hire staff, invest in technology, and expand programs. They often struggle with visibility and competition from larger organizations, making it difficult to attract and retain donors. Additionally, these nonprofits may face donor fatigue in their communities, challenges in complying with regulatory requirements, and difficulties in managing volunteers. Despite their deep local impact, these constraints can hinder their growth and long-term sustainability.

Another informative piece! Always fun to work with Tivoni Devor and Ryan Ulbrich, and I learned a lot on this one. You've probably heard about the Inflation Reduction Act, Cares Act, and other federal legislation that has created a bonanza of opportunities for individuals and nonprofits to access government dollars. But did you know those awards can be incredibly burdensome for recipient organizations to accept? Check out the quick blog below for specific strategies nonprofits can use to prepare for this windfall opportunity, as well as ways funders can step in to help.
Recent legislation has opened up incredible opportunities for nonprofits to access government dollars, but these coveted grants often come in the form of reimbursement-based awards that require organizations to complete the work before receiving any funding. This structure means nonprofits must foot the bill for their activities upfront, and it poses a particularly acute challenge for grassroots groups with less resources on hand. In a recent blog post, our colleagues Tivoni Devor and Ryan Ulbrich outline potential solutions for both donors and nonprofits. Learn how to better navigate and access these reimbursement-based government grants to continue maximizing your impact. Read more here: https://ow.ly/so3M50RF1fY
