For instance, take the Sfaxian clothing seller who’s captured the attention of Tunisians across the country by being authentically herself on social media. She understands how to connect with her audience in a way that resonates culturally and socially. Jumia’s withdrawal isn’t just a sign of a failed strategy; it’s an enormous opportunity. It opens the door for Tunisian entrepreneurs or even the government to step in and develop the next big e-commerce platform tailored to the local market. The key to this lies in learning from the smaller, successful e-commerce ventures that have already found ways to thrive by embracing Tunisian preferences. Whether it’s offering cash-on-delivery options, creating engaging social media content, or understanding regional tastes and trends, these local businesses have cracked the code that Jumia couldn’t. This moment could be a turning point, paving the way for a homegrown e-commerce giant that not only understands the Tunisian market but also sets the standard for how e-commerce should operate in North Africa. By building on the insights gained from these small-scale successes, there’s potential to create a mega app that serves the needs and expectations of Tunisian consumers in a way that international companies have yet to achieve.
