As educators, it’s important that we recognize and support the unique needs of our Student Service Members/Veterans (SSM/V), including those in the National Guard and ROTC, who face the challenge of balancing their academic responsibilities with their service to our country or as they train in preparation of service. To help faculty navigate these situations, I’ve developed two form letters that can be used to offer support and flexibility to SSM/V students: (due to the limitations of file uploading the attached document contains both form letters) 1. A letter for educators to send to their SSM/V students, ensuring them of the professor’s commitment to flexibility, understanding, and academic success. 2. A template for SSM/V students to request accommodations for absences due to deployment, training, or other service-related obligations. These templates can be customized for any classroom and will hopefully assist other educators in supporting their student veterans and service members with compassion and understanding. #HigherEd #StudentVeterans #VeteranSupport #MilitaryStudents #StudentSuccess #AcademicSupport #InclusiveEducation #MilitaryFriendly #HigherEducationLeadership #VeteransInEducation #FlexibleLearning #ProfessorsOfLinkedIn

April is the month of the Military Child and while we celebrate them every day Partners in PROMISE will be shouting them out all month long!!! Did you Know? - That according to the Department of Defense (DOD), Military children change schools an average of six to nine times from the start of kindergarten to their high school graduation! That is a lot of transitioning for any child, much less our special education military children. So let's talk some tips to support them: ✨ Prep them for the move - once it a definitive (because we know dates can change) or at least once you know that you are PCSing even if you don't know where to prep them so that they can prepare for the transition ✨ Set a meeting with their IEP or 504 team - you want to discuss the upcoming move and make sure that the IEP or 504 accurately reflects your child's progress and records! ✨ Hand-carry the documents! I can't stress this enough make sure you have copies in hand of your child's special education record, preferably electronic ones too. Schools misplace emails and documents or forget to send them. ✨Lastly, try to have some decompression time in there because transitioning can be stressful for everyone, and needing to decompress is so important for our kids and ourselves. How many schools has your child attended? Comment below! #MonthOfTheMilitaryChild #April #MilitaryChildren #MilitaryFamilies #SpecialEducation #EFMP
