As #youthmonth draws to a close I found myself reflecting on how crucial youth employment in the maritime sector truly is and for various reasons: The #maritimesector plays a pivotal role in #global trade and #transportation. As the sector expands, there is a continuous need for a skilled workforce, including #youngprofessionals who bring fresh perspectives and technological proficiency in this age of the Industrial revolution. The maritime industry offers a wide range of job opportunities, from seafaring roles to various shore-based positions in #marineengineering and #manufacturing. Encouraging youth employment in this sector helps alleviate unemployment among young people and stimulates economic growth. Working in the maritime sector equips young people with valuable skills such as teamwork, problem-solving and technical expertise. These skills are transferable across various industries and contribute to personal development and career advancement. Many of our interns have gone on to take up various roles in our business and others have taken to the seas and are working on some of the biggest cruise liners, tankers and container ships in various parts of the globe. 🌍🎉🥳 The maritime industry is increasingly adopting advanced technologies such as automation, digitalization, and renewable energy solutions. Engaging youth in this sector encourages innovation and the adoption of sustainable practices, crucial for the future of maritime operations. There is also a growing emphasis on sustainable practices in the maritime industry to reduce carbon emissions and minimize environmental impact. Engaging youth in the sector promotes awareness of these issues and encourages the development of eco-friendly solutions. Investing in youth employment ensures a pipeline of skilled professionals who can lead the industry into the future. I had the pleasure of taking a prospective intern to a construction site earlier in the week. As we moved round the site, I couldn't help but appreciate his eagerness to gain on-the-ground experience. He shared that he recognized the vast knowledge awaiting him in the field, and believed it to be the best classroom for his growth. It reminded me of my early years, when I, too, was fueled by a thirst for hands-on learning. What fascinated me was his honesty about realizing that the rugged site life might not be a long-term fit. Surprisingly, this mirrored my own revelation after spending three years in the field. I found myself drawn back to the consultancy environment, recognizing my strengths and preferences. In our conversation, he expressed similar sentiments about his inclination towards a consultancy role eventually. Here's the wisdom I shared with him: ➡️ Use your internship and NYSC period to learn the intricacies of construction. Afterward, you can decide whether to remain in construction or pivot to an office job. ➡️ I also advised him to consider this time as an investment, one that would undoubtedly enhance his skills and understanding of the industry. Whether it is the site or the consultancy boardroom, each experience contributes to the growth of a young professional. Moreover, one’s early years set the tone for a career of impactful contributions. Keep this in mind as a young professional ⬇️ Growth is not a one-size-fits-all journey. Instead, growth combines different experiences to create a truly versatile professional. URGENT HELP NO LONGER NEEDED - THANK YOU A contact of mine, Peter Corbishley of Principia School of Language, runs a programme for apprentices with BASF in Germany to visit Worcester for a month. This involves an internship with a local business for a month or split between two businesses. 2 of the 3 apprentices arriving shortly already have placements (with Southco) but he needs a placement for the 3rd apprentice. Accommodation and the cultural/social sides of the visit are already organised. The apprentices arrive on 2nd March. I believe that an immersive experience in an English-speaking environment will provide me with the ideal setting to improve my language proficiency. Moreover, Worcester is the perfect place with its rich history and vibrant culture for personal development. I am excited of exploring the city with its residents to gain a deeper understanding for the local culture. This experience will expand my horizon and provide valuable insights which I will take with me when I return to Germany. Thanks to my work experience at BASF SE Ludwigshafen and the different departments I worked in, I gained skills in commercial activities. I learned project management by preparing and holding online conferences with international partners from BASF. I gained skills in marketing by working at trade fairs in a HR department and thereby convinced people to apply to BASF. In Supply Chain Management I conducted routine tasks like transport booking and working directly with international partners every day. In my free time, I like to go to the gym, meet up with my friends and like to travel. Besides that I have a passion for cars because of their history, technology and the joy of driving. I went to many car museums like Porsche in Stuttgart, Mercedes-Benz in Stuttgart and BMW in Munich to learn more about different car models, the technology and the brand itself or researched the information by myself (via videos, internet etc.). The aim of the cooperation is to jointly develop the abilities of talented students through innovative education and participation on practical, real-life projects in an international environment.
