6 Women In Construction Who Paved The Industry Today In the 19th century, individual women began defying gender restrictions to fill important construction roles, although their contributions were not fully recognized at the time. From the woman who supervised construction of the Brooklyn Bridge when her husband became ill to the first female architects to an originator of ergonomic design (who was required to list her husband as co-author on her books, although she had a PhD and he never attended college), they made history and paved the way for future generations of women in the field. Today, Gladious is celebrating the role of women in the construction industry by highlighting a report released by Building (building.co.uk): "Women in Construction." This report highlights the contributions of 12 high-performing women in the field. According to Editorial Director Chloe Mcculloch, “in the UK, women make up just under 16% of the construction workforce – and only a fraction of those have site-based roles. This country is not alone; construction around the world is overwhelmingly still a male domain.” Among those highlighted is Kimberly Dowdell, President at American Institute of Architects and director of strategic relationships at architecture firm HOK. She is responsible for ensuring that HOK’s 24 global studios successfully work together and with their clients. Educated at Cornell University and Harvard Kennedy School, her passion for architecture was fuelled by growing up in Detroit during periods of disinvestment and property disuse. She advocates for cities to have chief architect positions to advise mayors on issues such as health equity, affordable housing and climate change. Tetiana Kanashchuk, Sustainability Consultant at Gleeds Ukraine, is also highlighted in the report. She joined Gleeds as an office manager and after pursuing qualifications such as the BREEAM assessor qualification, she helped the company grow along with her career path. She shared that “it was a challenge. At that time my child was a small toddler; it was tricky to juggle.” Her message to women in constructions is “Be brave. Our women are brave – and we have no choice but to go into spheres that have not been popular with women, to rebuild the country...It will be our will to carry on and survive that sees us recover and rebuild – which we already are.” Jane Richards, Head of Building Structures UK, was also featured in the supplement. Having spent 40 years in the industry, Jane Richards is head of a team of 300 structural engineers and a leader in her field. Noting that women can find it challenging to fit into a largely male sphere, she says “What we do is very complex and challenging at times, and that does create all sorts of tensions – but also I think it really does foster a lot of collaboration as well.” She believes that hybrid work flexibility is key in allowing women to progress in the construction industry due to the unique demands women face balancing work and family life. As building.co.uk states, “We are making progress, but there is undeniably an incredibly long way to go – which is why it is so important to amplify the voices of the many women carving out their place in this male-dominated space, breaking down barriers to access not only for themselves but also for the talented women who will follow after them.” The full supplement can be found here: https://lnkd.in/epqRQFRs
