🗣️ Yesterday, I participated in a roundtable discussion titled 'Municipalities and Long-Term Care,' where, along with other guests including dr. Katja Simončič and Tina Lipar from the Ministry of Solidarity Future, Mojca Šraj from the Intergenerational Center Komenda, prof. dr. Jože Ramovš from the Anton Trstenjak Institute, and Jože Stritar, an informal caregiver, we discussed the role of municipalities in implementing the new Long-Term Care Act in Slovenia. The roundtable, led by Ana Ramovš from Anton Trstnjak Institute, was opened with an introductory speech by the State Secretary responsible for long-term care, Dr. Luka Omladič. 🤝 Municipalities are, and will continue to be, one of the key players contributing to the successful implementation of the Long-Term Care Act (ZDOsk-1), alongside other public services and non-governmental organizations. For quality long-term care in the community, it is crucial to foster collaboration between all involved stakeholders—both formal and informal. I emphasized the need to address regional disparities in the accessibility and availability of home care in Slovenia, underscoring the pivotal role of informal caregivers for the sustainability of long-term care systems. I highlighted their needs for support, counselling, education, and respite from caregiving, as providing intensive care often negatively impacts their quality of life. While ZDOsk-1 has significant potential to meet the needs of users and informal caregivers, the greatest challenge for the successful implementation of the new law will undoubtedly be ensuring a skilled workforce for the quality delivery of services. Thanks to everyone involved for a great event! 👏 🌐 #longtermcare #collaboration #healthcare #socialwelfare #lawimplementation

Caring for carers 💞 We're committed to helping people age with dignity and improving the well-being of caregivers. The Jockey Club Carer Space Project aims to connect over 40,000 caregivers and elderly people in need of care to timely and appropriate support services. As people age, they may find themselves becoming disconnected from the community or facing financial difficulties. To help our seniors age with dignity and respect, we have been making efforts to build Hong Kong into an age-friendly city, to enhance family wellbeing, and to promote the use of digital technology for health management. We are committed to nurturing a more friendly, supportive environment which can improve the lives of the elderly and those who stand by them. Caregivers play an important role in supporting the ageing journey of older people, yet they often face challenges and significant stress, with their own needs frequently overlooked. Recognising the need for broader attention in this area, “The Jockey Club Carer Space Project (JC Carer Space)” was initiated as a pilot programme that aims to connect caregivers and older people with care needs to timely and appropriate services. Launched in 2023, the programme has established carer-centric service centres across Hong Kong, increasing public awareness on caregivers’ needs and promoting a carer-friendly community. 💡 Find out more: https://lnkd.in/gFzxEZWR #HKJC #HKJCCharitiesTrust #HKJCCommunity

I benefited hugely from being able to present insights from a pilot intervention in Indonesia in a symposium focused on "Home-based health and social care for older people in the Global South" at the British Society of Gerontology annual conference in Newcastle. The symposium brought together experts working on South Africa (in the Family Caregiving programme), Brazil (Karla Giacomin and Peter Lloyd-Sherlock) and Indonesia, as well as including a comparative overview paper that reported on the Seychelles and Thailand. My paper was titled “Community volunteer-based home visits to housebound older people in Indonesia: A Critical Evaluation" and reported on a small intervention whereby trained community volunteers visit house-bound older people for health checks, health advice, companionship and support for family carers. There were several common themes across the symposium, such as the significance of using locally-recruited volunteers or paid carers, the importance of training, the value to family carers of receiving outside support and encouragement, and the challenges around having a well-functioning referral chain so that older people who require attention from medical staff can be followed up on. I'm currently writing up the presentation for publication. In the meantime, the following short video captures some of the benefits of the home visit programme: https://lnkd.in/e_gu4rcF

In a bold leap towards healthier futures, five towns in Basilan Province are revolutionizing their approach to community well-being! 💙 From February 28 to March 1, 2024, municipal health officers, nurses, and community workers representing Isabela City, Lamitan City, Sumisip, Tipo-Tipo, and Maluso participated in the pilot run and training on the Zuellig Family Foundation (ZFF)’s Pook Malusog Dashboard. This dashboard helps collect and analyze health data in real-time, empowering local leaders to make informed decisions despite limited resources. As the trial wraps up, the five cities and municipalities are gearing up to fully implement the dashboard, excited about the potential it holds for improving the health of their communities. 👉 Read this article to learn more about the dashboard: https://lnkd.in/gxYU4EYm #PookMalusog #ZFFNutritionGovernance #ZuelligFamilyFoundation

Well-deserved recognition and spotlight for Dr. Villa and La Casa de la Salud 👏🏼 Community Health Workers play a pivotal role in public health, providing trusted and culturally relevant care and resources to marginalized communities. If you’re looking for an organization to support with your 3 T’s (time, talent, treasure), I highly recommend considering LCS. Bridging the gap between the public and public services is the most critical function a nonprofit organization can have to ensure we are still leveraging public resources as much as possible before supplementing with philanthropy.
Adjunct Professor - Department of Kinesiology and Health Sciences at Virginia Commonwealth University
Exciting News to Share from Richmond Free Press! 🌟 I am deeply honored to be featured in a recent article by the Richmond Free Press, highlighting the journey and the work we do at La Casa de la Salud. This recognition not only reflects my personal commitment but also shines a light on our collective efforts to improve health accessibility and outcomes for the Hispanic community. Starting La Casa de la Salud was a leap of faith, driven by a desire to make a meaningful difference. It's a privilege to lead an organization that bridges significant gaps in healthcare for underserved communities. Our team’s dedication and the continued support from our community have allowed us to expand our reach and deepen our impact. As we continue to grow and serve more areas, including recent expansions into Virginia Beach and Harrisonburg, our mission remains the same: to provide crucial health education and preventive services to those who need them most. I invite you to read more about our initiatives and the paths we are forging for better community health in the linked article. Let's continue to collaborate and innovate for a healthier tomorrow. 🔗 Read the full article here https://lnkd.in/eQR9AvEB #CommunityHealth #PublicHealth #HealthcareAccess #Leadership #HispanicCommunity

When you're talking about something as vital and as big as the health of all New Zealanders, a three hour workshop with post it notes doesn't cut it. What we need, and what we are asking for, is a solution where those with decades of experience are participating fully. Excluding the expertise and insights of those directly working within the aged care sector will lead to missed opportunities to develop sustainable, effective models of care. We're ready to contribute our knowledge and work alongside government to create a future that supports the growing needs of our ageing population. We've got a common understanding of where we are, what we need is a common understanding of where we're going. https://lnkd.in/g6UymBzC
