everyone deserves a quality education. but the reality is this: many k-12 school districts are hurting--some districts have plenty of resources, while others are struggling. this educational inequality has existed a long time. and there are no easy answers or solutions. many schools lack programs in the arts--and that's so sad because arts education is vitally important. music, drama, fine arts--all deserve a place in school curricula. but many schools have cut these programs.

No, it isn't JUST about access to arts education - but access to life-changing, high-quality, culturally reflective arts education. With music education, students are: - 45 percent more likely to vote - 20 percent more likely to be gainfully employed - 5X less likely to drop out of school Yet 40 percent of CPS schools are failing to provide strong arts programming for their students. Let's change that. Attend a CPS Budget Roundtable and use this toolkit from Ingenuity - Chicago to advocate for the arts. We can make a difference in our schools and communities by showing up. Participants will be able to share the needs of their school communities and offer suggestions on how to make the school funding process FOR THE ARTS more equitable, transparent and sustainable. It's a small tactic that could make a huge difference in the future of the youth of Chicago.

Say it loud! 📣The arts are essential and a human right! To limit students access to arts education is to deny critical opportunities for social emotional development as well as other critical aptitudes: Confidence, creative problem-solving, cultural awareness, communication, conflict resolution, collaborative empathy and self-awareness. Decreasing support for arts education limits the ability for low-income communities to envision the many possible pathways that exist in both arts and non-arts professions. The proposed cuts disproportionately impact students in those communities.

So, I was just checking my email and came across a series of articles from myriad perspectives that make a very interesting read together: Asif Majid poses big questions on the ArtsEd Amplified blog from the Arts Education Partnership in an article titled, “Has Arts Education Failed BIPOC Communities?” Read here: https://lnkd.in/gvZBS_af Last week, Srishti Prabha, released this article/audio in NPR’s Morning Edition focused on showcasing a strong practice, “Schools aim to enrich students by expanding culturally responsive arts education.” Listen and read here: https://lnkd.in/gEy4WPu5 Following up on this, yesterday, Prabha, published an article in the Sacramento observer, thinking about systemic barriers, “Black and Brown students are enriched by culturally reflective arts education. But can Sacramento County provide it?” Read here: https://lnkd.in/gNUhu_4C What this tells me is simple: many programs purport to achieve certain objectives, especially for folks most on the margins as a result of our broken systems (in the case of arts ed, that is usually BIPOC, rural and disability communities); we know what we have to do to achieve the desired outcomes and impact toward inclusion and belonging (i.e. culturally responsive arts education, accessibility, etc); yet we are held back by the limitations of our systems, like cultural funding and educational policy. When might it be time for whole systems reform?

so much to say about this....hardly anything positive. This wonderful school with an impeccable legacy fell victim to three main problems: 1) US schools anymore have simply become bureaucratic nightmares hell bent on lining the pockets of a few while compensating teachers less and less, in the end populating the ranks of educators with mere contractors 2) It is impossible to teach in higher Ed as students have been given the opportunity to get out of everything. Late on several assignments? Just turn in a letter saying you had a mental health issue. Failing to come into class half of the time? Turn in a letter that says you have social anxiety. Coming to class but taking 30 min breaks to smoke weed? Turn in a letter saying you need medicinal Marijuana to function daily. 3) PAFA was also a victim of DEI initiatives gone horribly wrong. Students were actively recruited from underprivileged backgrounds who were underprepared for any type of undergraduate experience. They should have received additional tutoring services all throughout their undergrad or never been accepted in the first place. On several occasions some of the worst students were simply shuttled from one class to the next, with the understanding that while they did not deserve to graduate, their perceived achievements were desperately needed in order to fulfill a DEI quota. If instructors took issue with a students behavior or work ethic, particularly if they were from an underprivileged background, they were often labeled as racist or told to stand down from higher ups.
