And your one purchase won’t really make a difference… or will it? Independent retailers return, on average, $53 of every $100 spent at their business back to your local economy. This money recirculates through your community, boosting job growth, charitable giving, and civic engagement. While national chain stores return $14 of every $100 spent, for Amazon, the money returned to the local economy (called the multiplier effect) is close to zero." Most local, independent businesses are online, too. If you can make your purchases from them - either in person or online - you are contributing to the multiplier effect. Groundhog Day Rules for Fundraisers My wife rightfully accuses me that when I shift into my fundraising mode, I have a profound proclivity to repeat myself. Guilty as charged. But Groundhog Day, inspiration for the 1993 movie of the same name starring Bill Murray in which he is forced to relive the same day over and over again, is a fitting occasion to share three of my favorite cardinal rules: 1. Listen more than you speak: My mentor Laura Fredricks, The Expert on THE ASK, says that in a productive meeting, the donor speaks 75% of the time, and the solicitor 25%. 2.  Be specific when you ask: You have to ask for a specific amount, purpose, and delivery date. Just asking someone to make a gift undermines the potential of the outcome. We live in a cost-oriented world, and philanthropy is no different. 3. You can’t thank too much: A useful rule of thumb is 7X, thanking donors on seven different occasions during the year for their gifts. Here is to six more weeks of raising record amounts of money.

As the holiday season approaches, it's important to remember that gift-giving is not always straightforward in the business world. While it's a thoughtful gesture, requesting donations from vendors can put them in a difficult position. As a vendor myself, I've had clients ask for donations ranging from $500-$1,000 per property. While I love giving back, it's important to have a clear understanding of expectations. If vendors are donating significant amounts, it's challenging to provide rock bottom prices and meet budget expectations. Managers, make sure to be clear about your company's policies on gift-giving and donations. Not all companies allow staff to request gifts, and those that do may have a limit on the number of gifts that can be received. Let's make sure that we approach gift-giving with transparency and respect for all parties involved.
