It was great to attend the British Hydropower Association's conference on Pumped Hydropower Storage last week and meet leaders from across the industry. There's much to learn from those working on pumped storage projects in the UK, with an impressive pipeline of projects already under development. Key takeaways from the event.. 1. There are many benefits pumped hydro can provide that competing technologies like Li-ion batteries can’t: local economic benefit via construction and supply chain jobs, lower embodied carbon, long-life infrastructure assets. It's essential that energy policy is designed to reward these benefits. 2. Pumped hydro projects today operate very differently to how they did in the past. Operational patterns of pumped hydro assets used to follow demand, pumping (charging) at night and generating during peak hours in the day. Now, the most common form of operation is Solar PV/wind peak shaving, pumping during daytime hours and cycling more frequently. 3. A Cap & Floor mechanism (as proposed by UK govt, currently under consultation) will be important in enabling investment into pumped hydro and other LDES technologies. 4. Much of the risk in pumped hydro is in the geotechnical risk category due to extensive tunnelling requirements. RheEnergise’s HD Hydro® solution circumvents most of this risk as we do not tunnel into mountains, instead laying the penstock (pipes) on the surface.

As we gear up for the summer season, the recent shutdowns of the Neelum Jhelum Hydropower Plant raise concerns about the reliability of our power infrastructure. Just within 11 months of its resumption, the plant has been halted again due to fresh faults. This highlights the critical need for comprehensive inspections and remedial actions to ensure uninterrupted power supply. With technical glitches disrupting power generation, it's imperative for authorities to address underlying issues promptly. This will enable the construction of 31 GW of hydropower capacity, including 15 GW from Pumped Storage Projects (#PSPs). The World Bank is supporting the Government of #Kyrgyzstan in reforming and modernizing the country's #energysector. With Minister of Energy Taalaibek Ibraev, we discussed the ongoing and future Bank-funded projects in the sector, including our assistance with the construction of the Kambarata-1 Hydropower Plant. This project has the potential to greatly improve #watermanagement, #energysecurity, and contribute to #decarbonization in #CentralAsia.
