This week, Professor Yun Zhao and Ms Alix Ng, Representative and Office Manager, respectively, of the Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific of the HCCH, received a delegation from the Korean Ministry of Justice led by Director Donghwan Shin, accompanied by Deputy Director Dahye Park and HyunJoon Hwang. In the final University Accord report released on Sunday ( https://lnkd.in/gdgJ9K_n) there are plenty of important recommendations that - if implemented correctly - can truly transform the tertiary education sector for decades. One of interest and very applicable to sport and exercise disciplines is #14, a recommendation to consider financial assistance for placements. This is an ongoing area of debate with sporting organisations often believing the value of their brand and experience can justify an unpaid placement/internship, while students feeling they are simply undertaking unpaid work. Can we do better? In the last 10 years when I was a postgrad course chair and responsible for student internships I’ve always bargained hard with clubs to introduce some payment to incentivise students and at least recognise their contributions. A few years ago Exercise & Sports Science Australia (ESSA) released their internship guidelines, a positive step in the right direction but I’m unsure of the real impact it has had in the industry. What other practical steps can we take to improve? Do you have examples that you can share?

Aiming to understand, inform and support systemic change in initial teacher education (ITE) by demonstrating the extent to, and conditions under which extended student-teacher internships (ESTIs) can be an effective, efficient and widely used model that can contribute to teacher education pathways that produce high-quality teachers for public schools in South Africa. This is what the Teacher Internship Collaboration South Africa (TICZA) aims to achieve. Researchers investigate models incorporating part-time employment, internships, or skill-based programs, creating a symbiotic relationship between learning and earning. By identifying sustainable avenues for students to contribute to campus functions, these studies aim to address financial barriers, ensuring that the brightest minds are not sidelined due to economic constraints, fostering a more inclusive and accessible higher education landscape

I spoke with Peter Khalil and Milton Dick MP at the morning tea for interns participating in the Australian National Internships Program. This semester, I am writing an economic research paper on the housing crisis. Since Y2K, housing supply has not kept up with rising demand. House prices have gone up twice as fast as incomes. The 'bank of mum and dad' now defines the financial future of young Australians. My paper focuses on improving the planning system to increase the supply and density of housing in Australia's cities.
