Thus far, the internship has provided him with the opportunity to screen movies, improve resume writing skills, and conduct mock interviews. Ultimately, The Storytellers Lab program will culminate with the development of compelling social media spots showcased on MTV Entertainment Studios' influential digital platforms. Jacob’s Experience: “I've been working on a few projects, including professional portfolios, mock interviews, and branding. The storytelling lab operates at a fast and tight pace, which has made my experience intriguing. We attend seminars for approximately two to three days each week to expand our knowledge of various industry-related topics. Among the interesting things I’ve learned was how to promote myself and my brand. The sectors of the entertainment industry that interest me the most are journalism, reporting, and acting. Researching the industry itself is one of the skills that I'm still working on and improving. I'm always learning new skills to improve my writing and data analysis.” hashtag #DegaProud #Since1867

Sometimes you just have to jump into the fire, even when you don’t feel like you’re 100 percent ready. I am sure there are many times I have felt that way in my career, but one particular moment sticks out to me when I was an intern. I had just landed an internship at the daily newspaper in the town I was going to college in and after handling a few feature story assignments, the editor pulled me into his office and said he needed me to attend a City Council meeting the next day. The City Hall reporter was out. This was not only the first government meeting I had ever covered, but there was a huge issue on the agenda. I of course said I would do it and the editor did a great job prepping me. The experience was nerve-racking but I learned a ton, gained confidence and benefited from one of the most thorough edits of anything I have written in my life from the editor. The editor clearly was paying more attention to this story than the feature story I did at the school. That experience taught me that interns or newly-hired graduates need those kind of opportunities but also the right feedback and editing. Yes, don’t create major risk for your brand (I think that editor of mine created some safeguards with me), but provide assignments that help interns learn and stretch. I’m trying to practice that with the interns we get the chance to work with, especially for those who I see big potential with. For example, I asked one intern (the woman featured in the graphic below) who was very skilled in graphics to take a stab at redesigning our company logo, which we’re rolling out soon. And I asked another intern to take on all of the social media work we’re doing with a client who we helped launch a new digital-only niche site. Very much like that editor did for me, I attempt to provide guardrails and feedback so it’s not a scary situation but a positive one. 😊 My internship(s) were so meaningful in my development that I want others to experience the same thing. #Internship #CareerGrowth #LearningExperience 🌱 #EmbraceChallenges 💪 #Mentorship 🤝 #ProfessionalGrowth 📈

CEO Agile Rainmakers | Business Development Consulting | Author of Intern Management and How To Intern Successfully
If still you wonder why I write books about internships, all you need to do is read this well written and insightful article in The Boston Globe titled: These Summer Interns Were Ghosted By Their Bosses. Of all the things going on in the world today that lack integrity, you would think that at least a college student would be treated with DIGNITY when they spend a summer interning. That is clearly not the case! Hence the need for a book series that brings dignity to internships. It is all simple stuff. You just have to really care. I will give you one tip. The article says interns finish their work and have nothing to do all day. SOLUTION: Well before the intern shows up, identify numerous projects the intern can work on and give them all to the intern at once at the very beginning. Then, trust they will prioritize and manage their time like they do with their various college classes. They are great multi-taskers. Monitor progress periodically and have more projects ready - that you thought through before they started - to give them. No ghosting necessary. It is all in INTERN MANAGEMENT: Principles for Designing an Exceptional Internship. Why not bring dignity to your internship, if you know in your heart it hasn't been present? #internships #innovation #management

Not all internship supervisors are equally good, not all internships are well designed, and working remotely makes it harder - but: I have counseled many young adults through this challenge. A few thoughts for students: if possible, ask to come in to the office for important meetings or when your supervisor is in the office - shadowing him/her will be valuable; early on ask other early career professionals in the same organization or industry what they read every day to be smarter about trends in the field - or better yet, ask your supervisor if there are industry studies, list serves or events that they follow/subscribe to that they want to read/watch/attend and subscribe to those and read/watch/attend them. If you see something interesting send your supervisor a short email “I saw this on X and found the concept of Y really relevant to our work on Z. Am I thinking about that correctly?” Chance are they don’t have time to read/watch/attend everything they’d like to and you may have an opportunity to select and summarize the ones you find most relevant. You will learn a ton regardless. Those of us who employ college students should use the many resources available to design high impact experiences.

My internship took an unexpected turn when… A few years back, during my internship days at Leo Burnett in client services, my manager tasked me with reviewing a presentation template. They asked me to check for errors and improve it. The template itself seemed a bit dated, so I went beyond basic proofreading and started revamping the design, including changing the color scheme. Confident in my work, I submitted the revised presentation. Days passed without feedback, and I finally reached out to my manager for their thoughts. It was then that I learned that completely changing the template theme wasn't the intention. This experience highlighted the importance of clear communication. While I aimed to improve the presentation, a lack of specific direction led to additional work on both ends. The key takeaway: Always clarify expectations, especially when working on a new task or project. #Communication #MyStory #Internship
