🗑️ Australia is the second highest generator of single-use plastic packaging waste per capita in the world. 🌱 AIBN group leader Nasim Amiralian hopes to change this stat with sugarcane waste. Speaking at the AgriFutures Australia inaugural AgriFutures growAG Catalyst Pitch event in Sydney, Nasim outlined her grand vision to develop bio inspired packaging to replace materials that are traditionally used in supermarkets, including berry punnets. One of seven female innovators selected to participate in this year’s growAG cohort, Nasim did the AIBN proud with her call to action for collaboration and investment agricultural, food and beverage, and healthcare industries to advance her work. “Posed with the significant challenge of mitigating packaging, food and agricultural waste, my team is developing bio packaging that is both compostable and recyclable with other fibre-based packaging like cardboard boxes,” Nasim told the Catalyst crowd. “We have created a packaging material from sugarcane trash that has the ability to replace plastic packaging and help extend the shelf life of products thanks to its anti-microbial properties.” The AgriFutures growAG Catalyst program supports women in agrifood tech and innovation in Australia and New Zealand. In 2024 the initiative has identified innovators with exceptional research or technology innovations ready for commercialisation and the next stage of development. #HELM2030 Sustainability is a core pillar of the HELM 2030 strategy. At all three of our terminals, we have implemented changes to meet these goals and maintain high standards for terminal operations. We balance the necessity of our products with environmental concerns by minimizing negative effects through the implementation of terminal operational standards, carefully choosing more efficient equipment, and advocating the use of nitrogen stabilizers that both improve nitrogen uptake in the field and reduce the opportunity for leaching. One of the challenges is communicating our future strategy initiatives to our colleagues who do not have regular access to the HELM Intranet and HELM 2030 developments and goals. To address this challenge, we have begun quarterly meetings with all employees to communicate HELM 2030 progress and ensure our HELM goals of Quality, Health, Safety, and Environment are clearly communicated and are being met, and provide opportunity for discussion.
