Fidelity Investments Customer Relationship Advocate Job Simulation on Forage -April 2024: I recently participated in Fidelity's virtual job simulation on the Forage platform, and it was incredibly useful to understand what it might be like to participate in the Customer Service team at Fidelity. I worked on a project to manage client inquiries. I practiced using active listening skills and built my ability to quickly manage and resolve complex situations in a real-world context. Doing this program confirmed that I really enjoy working to help clients reach their financial dreams and I’m excited to apply these skills on the Customer Service team at a company like Fidelity. * Completed a simulation focused on learning customer service on the Fidelity Investments team. * Navigated multiple customer calls effectively using active listening skills. Earlier this quarter, I closed my first major deal at Reward Gateway, and what a journey it's been! 🚀 Starting fresh in a new company is no small feat when learning new products, building new relationships and ramping up a whole new pipeline from scratch. But here are some lessons I've picked up along the way: 1️⃣ Be kind to yourself - Rome wasn't built in a day! 2️⃣ Confidence is your superpower - believe in your abilities 3️⃣ Build those internal relationships - your colleagues are your best allies 4️⃣ Take it step by step, especially with complex products 5️⃣ Focus on daily improvements - small steps lead to big leaps 6️⃣ Run your own race - comparison only slows you down 7️⃣ Embrace the challenge - sales can be really tough, but that's what makes it rewarding 8️⃣ Ask questions, stay curious - there's no such thing as a silly question! When I decided to apply for a job at Neo Financial, I was looking for a few things: 1. At Neo’s offices in Calgary and Winnipeg, some of the most skilled professionals from across Canada and around the world are doing extraordinary work to transform financial services for the better. They’re setting a new pace of innovation in financial technology, all with the aim of helping Canadians get more value from every dollar they earn, save, and spend. It’s been a privilege to play a small supporting role in that journey — helping Neo define a compelling and competitive employer brand, build its communications infrastructure for both opportunities and challenges, and cement its reputation as a company poised to reshape Canada’s banking sector. Next month, I’ll be taking on a new challenge — answering a call to service that I can’t refuse. For now, I’m deeply grateful to have worked alongside Neo’s co-founders Andrew Chau, Jeff Adamson, Kris Read, and Chris Simair. At the risk of leaving anybody out, I won’t try to name all the team members I've grown to respect and appreciate. The one exception is Amanda Broos — the first person at Neo to interview me for this job, and the most impressive, skilled, and committed People leader I’ve ever met. A few weeks ago I took part in an enriching 4-day virtual work experience with the Bank of England! Over the 4 days, I had the incredible opportunity to dive deep into the workings of one of the most influential institutions in the world. This experience not only broadened my understanding of the Bank of England's pivotal role in the economy but also equipped me with invaluable skills and insights. Understanding the Bank of England: We started by exploring the Bank's primary functions, including maintaining monetary and financial stability. This foundational knowledge was crucial in appreciating the broader impact of the Bank's work on the economy and society. Collaborative Project Work: I was placed in a group with other bright minds, where we collaborated on a project that challenged us to think critically and creatively. Presenting our findings at the end of the experience was a rewarding way to apply what we had learned. Skills Builders: Throughout the program, we engaged in skills-building sessions that helped hone our abilities in areas such as communication, teamwork, and problem-solving—skills that are not only essential in a banking environment but also in any professional setting. Recruitment Insights: We had a chance to delve into the Bank’s recruitment process, gaining a better understanding of what they look for in candidates. This session was particularly enlightening, providing practical tips and guidance on how to stand out in such a competitive field. Speed Networking: One of the most exciting parts of the experience was the speed networking session, where we connected with various professionals from the Bank. It was a fantastic opportunity to ask questions, exchange ideas, and learn from their experiences. Career Stories: Hearing the career journeys of Bank of England employees was truly inspiring. Their diverse paths and the passion they have for their work reminded me of the importance of perseverance, continuous learning, and staying open to new opportunities. I’m incredibly grateful to the Bank of England for organizing this virtual experience and for the chance to learn from such esteemed professionals. If you could go back to your very 1st day, in your very 1st job, knowing what you know now - would you still walk through those doors? 🚪 What date was your 1st day? 📅 Mine was 29 years ago today. Monday July 10th 1995 😎 Who was your 1st job with? I had just joined Shipquay Square branch of Northern Bank (Then NAB, now Danske Bank) as a Bank Official. 🏦 Starting Salary - £7,700 p.a. 💷 I had just taken a 45% pay-cut from a role as a Production Operator in Seagate Technology to pursue a Corporate Career. My answer? - I still would. 👍 Why? - Whilst it took me a few years to realise it, I was solely in charge of my career and nobody had a responsibility to make it successful for me, that is when things took off. For most of my career, I feel I have been paid my worth. True 🙂 How did I make that happen? I delivered value and negotiated my share of this success. I had mentors, I adopted a coaching philosophy (heavily influenced in my early career by The Vince Lombardi principles), I took risks - by moving roles, departments, companies and even countries. I was resourceful and adaptable - at one stage I had had 15 different bosses in 13 years! The one common trend - I backed myself. I have had to sleep on friends sofas, just get the only promotion on offer in the down times. I grew my career in Dublin ☘ in the hugely competitive "Celtic Tiger" era 💹 and I reinvented my skill set, during the world greatest Corporate Bailout with RBS. 📉 Through all of these cycles - I have led teams to deliver. The key - "creating an environment that people want to be part of." That way, I could surround myself with amazing people, in a culture that they could thrive in and I would listen to what they had to say. Where do you find yourself now? Are you being paid your worth? Are you in an environment that you want to be part of? How would your team describe you as a leader?
