Small Dimensions ++ [the human experience in cities] Small dimensions in urban design can significantly enhance the human experience by creating spaces that are more engaging and inviting. Smaller buildings and narrower streets can feel more human-scale, fostering a sense of comfort and connection. This design invites pedestrians to explore and interact with their surroundings. Smaller spaces can be more easily adapted for various uses, such as markets, art fairs, or community events, fostering creativity and collaboration within the community. By prioritizing smaller dimensions and more intimate designs in urban planning, cities can create environments that not only support functionality but also enrich the human experience, promoting well-being and a sense of place.

Imagine a city where public spaces are vibrant, inviting, and filled with life. This is the vision of placemaking, a collaborative approach to urban planning that brings communities together to reimagine and rejuvenate their environments. Placemaking isn't just about changing the physical space; it's about creating a 'place' where people feel a deep connection and belonging. By involving local residents in the process, placemaking creates public spaces that are not only beautiful but also meaningful and reflective of the community's spirit. As more cities embrace this concept, we move closer to a future where every public space is a thriving hub of social activity and shared happiness. Swipe through to explore how placemaking is reshaping our urban landscapes and why it’s the heart of modern urban design. Public spaces such as sidewalks, streets, playgrounds, gardens, plazas, marketplaces, squares, parks, and waterfronts are areas for social interaction, economic exchange, cultural expression and building climate resilience. Yet often, the multifunctional potential of public spaces is not well reflected in their design. ✏️ Prepared by C40 Cities, this guidance aims to support cities to improve the provision and quality of their public spaces. Here’s a quick glimpse of Wednesday night’s placemaking event! It was great to see so many people actively engaging in the crucial discussion about creating meaningful spaces and places for our communities. As architects, we often find ourselves joining these projects in the later stages, when much of the groundwork has already been laid. However, at AT, we strongly believe that engaging in, and even facilitating, these early conversations is essential. By being involved from the outset, we can help shape the vision and direction of a project, ensuring that the spaces we create are not only functional but also deeply connected to the needs and aspirations of the communities they serve. This early input allows us to consider the broader context—cultural, social, and environmental—which leads to more thoughtful, sustainable designs that add significant long-term value. Whether we’re helping to shape a small local space or a larger community project, these early collaborations often result in more cohesive and vibrant places, reflecting the true essence of placemaking. We’re excited to continue being part of these transformative discussions and look forward to seeing how last night’s ideas will evolve into tangible projects that enrich our communities. “I’m interested in the imagination and creativity of design to transform our world with experiential and poetic spaces for all.” After exploring how we can create #SocialPublicSpaces at this month’s #ShapeMyCity with Churchman Thornhill Finch, landscape architect Sanjana Lokanathan shares her insight into the intricate relationship between space, time, and life. What are you interested in? The intricacies and the interweaving of spaces and life through time, constantly accruing meaning through the stories that unfold within, never ceases to amaze me. During the course of my masters, I came upon this thread that one of the aims of the surrealist is the transcendence of everyday reality and unveiling of the extraordinary within the mundane. I’m interested in the imagination and creativity of design to transform our world with experiential and poetic spaces for all – human and non-human. What building or place inspires you? Salk Institute by Louis Kahn is one of the projects that truly inspires me. The fluid interface between the built and the unbuilt responds poetically to the landscape it sits in and the sky that wraps all around. It brings into focus our senses to the rhythms of the natural world that are omnipresent but go unnoticed, creating an atmospheric space with meaning and beauty. What piece of advice would you give to your teenage self? To believe in and be kind to yourself, no matter what anyone says – and to do the things you love, fervently, and as obsessively as you want. Perhaps also not to try and define myself into who I want to be, but rather to pursue things that give me joy whether there’s an end goal or not. This quote by Oscar Wilde really resonates with me: “I am a person who does things – I write, I act – and I never know what I am going to do next. I think you can be imprisoned if you think of yourself as a noun.” #ShapeMyCity #Inspirer #SocialPublicSpaces #TalentAccelerator #FutureLeaders #ChurchmanThornhillFinch #LandscapeDesign #ShapingBetterPlaces #HealthyCities #HappyCities #DesignForWellbeing #Surrealism #SalkInstitute #SustainableDesign Image c. We're excited to shed light on That Pink Thing, a captivating installation that goes beyond the surface of urban landscapes. 💡 Aimed to transform the perception of plazas and shift their purpose from mere transit spaces to vibrant cultural hubs. 🏛️✨ That Pink Thing was created by Mexican artist Jeronimo Hagerman, in collaboration with architects María Langarita and Víctor Navarro. Together, they have embarked on a research project called Busto y Pellejo, challenging pre-established notions about public space and proposing innovative design alternatives for cities. 🌇🎨 One of the key objectives of That Pink Thing is to create an oasis where cultural activities can thrive, offering an escape from the urban hustle and bustle. By incorporating textile and plant elements on a grand scale, this installation not only conditions the plaza but also significantly reduces the energy consumption of the surrounding buildings. #MASSIVartLoves #JeronimoHagerman #MariaLangarita #VíctorNavarro #ThatPinkThing #CreativePlacemaking #UrbanInnovation
