IT'S CO-OP AND INTERN SEASON IN THE CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY! In the next few weeks, firms are onboarding young engineering, surveying, architecture, science, and construction management students. Let's help these students realize what great opportunities there are in the construction industry and let's help each other's students out. Students: Take advantage of your time in the office and field and learn all you can. Talk to people in your own company outside the group you are working in. On the site, ask questions of the construction manager and their team, and take the opportunity to learn from the many great tradespeople this industry has. Sometimes the best lesson you can take away from an internship is what you DON'T want to do. Don't feel bad about it, but don't burn your bridges. The construction industry, while large, is simultaneously small. A positive attitude can go a long way, and your team leader can often introduce you to someone who may be able to get you a job in an area you ARE interested in. But if you don't show up to learn and be the best you can, your team leader is unlikely to offer an introduction. Stories about bad attitudes in the field can spread like wildfire and quickly earn you a reputation (deserved or undeserved). Full-time team members: Reach out to your co-ops and interns and let them know you are open to questions. Mentor your co-ops and interns- these are the folks who will someday join your firm - or will join a competitor or client- your attitude matters! Reach out to your clients and volunteer to talk to their co-ops and interns if they are interested in your area of expertise. Ask your clients to speak to your co-ops if their ultimate career aspiration is something other than what is available at your firm, and help your students plan for their next internship with a company that better aligns with their goals. We sat down with our Intern, Gene Mongan, to get his take on what he’s been up to during his internship with our Northstar team. Gene’s biggest takeaway is, “The most rewarding thing for me while working with the Northstar team was having exposure to a wide range of projects throughout various stages of the design and construction processes. Everyone I spoke to at Northstar was very knowledgeable on these subjects and possessed backgrounds from various professions such as architecture, engineering, and business administration that further facilitated my learning.” Regarding the skills he acquired, “I was much more involved with the hands-on, on-site tasks and responsibilities compared to previous co-ops. I also greatly enjoyed the variety of tasks and challenges that I was given, such as developing site reports, performing inventory counts, and managing coordination between the owner, architect, and contractor. #RealTalk in Construction (Construction Talent) with Dylan (Post #2) It’s that season and time of year that we are welcoming Summer #Interns, #Coops and recent graduates as #NewEmployees to our construction offices and jobsites. Gentle reminder - The talent pool that is coming in is a resilient group that has adapted to many changes in the higher education environment (COVID, Remote learning, Rising costs of Education and much more to contend with) Recognize that their agility and resilience is an asset to our industry. I often hear construction leaders discuss how younger talent aren’t industry ready on Day 1. Well… I’d challenge that notion - perhaps you are trying to gain value in the wrong areas?? Get to know your new construction talent for who they are as #people and not just cogs in a wheel. The better you know their interest, skills and passion - the more benefits/value you will harness towards your business. So, here are a few things you could do for and with our new industry entrants: 1) Embrace Innovation - Hate to break it to you… but you nor I are the smartest in the room (so quit trying too hard). your new found talent may have some great ideas that you never thought of. Coach conformance to processes (yes they are learning and we must teach), but please encourage #innovation (think outside the box and big picture). Don’t stifle the talent you bring in with “your” overly cumbersome processes - you will lose people or worse…. Chase them out of our industry!!! 2) Teach and Coach them - you probably already do this, but consider getting more personal and creative with your approach - the talent pool is evolving, so your approach should too. Challenge your own process and approach. 3) Take time to listen to them - learn about their experience and harness the value they bring - Don’t get lost in the one way street of teaching/coaching. Not everyone is the same. Sometimes value is found not just in “construction experience” but in “life experience”. Don’t assume that a younger person has not experienced life… it’s just a different type of experience and vantage point. Don’t dismiss it! 4) Recognize that value is a 2-way street - set some goals (even if it is a brief internship), and ensure there is an accountability cycle. Make sure goals are balanced (not just top-down but also have goals that they set based on their interest and passion). If they set goals that you want (press a little harder to make sure - they may be scared and just trying to align with what you want to hear). Pause for credit… 3 and 4 above are thoughts learned from and reflected with, my Fiance Brit Purifoy and her dynamic approaches around #Leadership 5) Check-In - Ask often as to how they are doing. Our industry can ask a lot from our young professionals, and it’s important that we pause to check-in. Check in on their work load, check in on their state of mind, check in on how you can better support them - Please Check-In!!! Any thoughts to add??
