How might you design the future of a city through the eyes of a retailer? That's kind of the focus of the conversation with the second episode Challenger City TO where I spoke with Laura Pontoriero Manes. We talk about how we can look at the city differently to break out of the current vibe of stagnation, thinking about new developments in a way that ensures community, vibrancy and resiliency. Some of that is designing around the voices that are perhaps the least loud, but have needs that if served, benefit everyone. There's a bit around creating commercial spaces beyond the lowest common denominator box stores. Also, lessons from what Boston does rather well, as well as what we can apply from European cities too. There's some pretty bold bets in here that Toronto hasn't really done before, but without being so scary that we can't point to other places that have made it work for themselves. "You Google the service, you look at the top 3 results..." Chris Kiefer nails the process we all use when choosing service providers, restaurants...pretty much everything these days. And as he mentions, Google favors the most highly rated options. So as a business owner or professional services provider, you need good online reviews. Tim Kent, CAE on the 'Do Politics Better' podcast with Brian Lewis is a great listen on how politics works in the real world. I'm lucky to have such an insightful father for learning about this stuff. Dad starting the podcast by saying "must be a slow news day" is classic Tim Kent. There's a great story told in here about the importance of "how" you say things versus "what" you're saying when it comes to professional communciation. Worth listening! https://lnkd.in/dc3t-rRk

I make podcasts professionally for people in Leeds so that I can work for no money on making my podcast Working Hours about work in Leeds. If you're a Loiner get in touch now to book your recording and be on my podcast.
If you're thinking of being on a #podcast then check out James Varley's image here. (Sorry James, but it's a really great illustration) I recently interviewed James myself for Working Hours and his industry background means he really knows what he's doing when it comes to his content. So look at it and learn. He's nicely framed and lit within his shot He's centred in his shot, we're not looking up his nose or at half his face He's using headphones and a separate mic (not the web cam or laptop mic) AND YOU CAN SEE HIS BRAND in the video (not just once either) #Leeds why would you create any #content you don't #brand? My mind boggles. And I'll bet that he doesn't tap the desk, rustle papers or touch his face through the interview either. If you'd like your Working Hours video interview to be used for your Working Hours episode then let me know when we arrange your recording and make sure you make the most of it for yourself by doing the above. A podcast is often a chat, but it's also a stealth pitch opportunity for you. Embed your brand in the audio and visual of your content, like James has here. #workinghourspodleeds
What a pleasure it was to chat to Fiona Campbell, CEO of the Association of Scotland's Self-Caterers, this week for an upcoming episode of the Holiday Cottage Handbook Podcast. We took a deep dive into the calamitous impact of short-term lettings licensing in Scotland, including how it is affecting hosts, guests, and the wider tourism industry. The episode will be available soon across HCH channels. Watch this space for details!
