On Thursday, November 28 speaks MD-PhD candidate orthopedic surgery and sports medicine Sharaisha Bilgoe at our Annual Scientific Sportsmedicine Conference. Her session is called: 'Mental health symptoms among Dutch elite athletes and their coaches'. https://bit.ly/4altcIZ This study highlights the importance of addressing mental health symptoms among Dutch elite athletes and coaches. Moreover, it provides insights into the associations between mental health symptoms and potential contributing factors such as severe injuries, surgeries and adverse life events, so that preventive measures or subsequent treatment can be provided for both athletes and coaches when they are at risk. Our findings also provide insight into the views and needs regarding mental health support/guidance among Dutch elite athletes and coaches. #smwjc24

For orthopaedic residency graduates, joining a practice or hospital system can seem like the most important goal. But, CAO Vice President, Dr. Louis Levitt, wants new orthopaedic physicians to slow down and ask themselves some important questions, such as what does work-life balance look like for you, or where do you want to live? These questions are integral for being the best orthopaedic surgeon you can be. Read more of Dr. Levitt’s expert advice in his recent Healio article here: https://bit.ly/3zwHw4P

Once upon a time, on a football field not far away, a young athlete who took a blow to the head returned back into the game. But now we know better. Lindsey Sweat, MD, a board-certified sports medicine physician at Summit Sports Medicine & Orthopaedic Surgery, reminds us that concussions are serious, and early detection is key. If you experience headaches, dizziness or difficulty concentrating after a blow to the head, it’s important to get evaluated. Rest is essential for recovery, both mentally and physically. Excited to share our latest research, "No Correlation Between Differences in Adverse Events and Patient-Reported Outcome Measures in Orthopedic Trauma RCTs"! 🚑 Our systematic review, involving 30 RCTs and over 6,700 patients, sheds light on a crucial aspect of patient care in orthopedic trauma. Despite the assumption that fewer complications would lead to better patient-reported outcomes (PROMs), our findings reveal no significant correlation between adverse events and PROMs. This raises important questions about how we power studies and assess recovery! Key Takeaway: Orthopedic trauma studies should focus not only on patient-reported outcomes but also on detecting differences in major adverse events that matter to patients and surgeons alike. 🌟 Exciting News! 🌟 I'm thrilled to announce that my latest research paper, in collaboration with the UCSD School of Medicine Orthopedics Department and SpineZone, has been published! This study focuses on the effectiveness of exercise-based rehabilitation for individuals with lumbar spinal stenosis, one of the most debilitating sources of spine pain. Our study assessed the impact of physical therapy across 1,806 patients with mild, moderate, and severe stenosis. Notably, we found that exercise-based rehabilitation is just as effective for those with severe stenosis as it is for those with milder cases. This challenges the common assumption that severe cases require immediate surgical intervention. Highlights from our findings: Significant improvements in pain, disability, strength, and patient goal achievement across all stenosis severity groups. We believe this research will contribute to shaping future treatments and improving quality of life for patients with spine-related issues. 📝 Read the full paper here: [Link: https://lnkd.in/gA7qGzZS] A big thank you to everyone involved in this project! Looking forward to continuing to advance orthopedic care and rehabilitation practices. #Orthopedics #SpineHealth #PhysicalTherapy #SpinalStenosis #Research #PatientCare #HealthcareInnovation #UCSD #SpineZone
