Most inflammatory breast cancers are invasive ductal carcinomas, which means they developed from cells that line the milk ducts of the breast and then spread beyond the ducts. Inflammatory breast cancer progresses rapidly, often in a matter of weeks or months. Inflammatory breast cancer is either stage III or IV at diagnosis, depending on whether cancer cells have spread only to nearby lymph nodes or to other tissues as well. It is not commonly picked up by a mammogram. We wear blue for Colorectal Cancer Awareness month!! New data from American Cancer Society reports that colorectal cancer is now the leading cancer killer for men under 50 and ranks second for women under 50 just behind breast cancer. Colorectal cancer screening saves lives. Regular screening, beginning at age 45, is the key to preventing colorectal cancer (cancer of the colon or rectum). If you’re 45 to 75 years old, get screened for colorectal cancer regularly. If you’re younger than 45 and think you may be at high risk of getting colorectal cancer, or if you’re older than 75, talk to your doctor about screening. Colorectal polyps and colorectal cancer don’t always cause symptoms, especially at first. That is why getting screened regularly for colorectal cancer is so important. #noonefightsalone #colorectalcancerawareness

In recognition of World Breast Cancer Research Day, we’re shining a light on breast cancer research and advocating for ongoing clinical trials to help the one in eight women who will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime and improve the way we treat cancer for the future.     Recent data is showing a shift in breast cancer diagnosis and treatment delivery with an increase in metastatic cases, which could be a result of COVID restrictions and increase in late diagnosis. Today, on #WorldLungCancerDay, let’s take a moment to acknowledge the impact of lung cancer. It’s a sobering fact that lung cancer claims more lives yearly than breast, colon, and prostate cancers combined. In 2020, there were 2.21 million new cases and 1.80 million deaths from lung cancer worldwide. But there’s hope on the horizon. Researchers are making strides in treatment options. For instance, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center reported promising results from clinical trials testing combination therapies. Pfizer’s Lorbrena has shown to extend life for patients with a rare form of lung cancer. Let’s stay curious and hopeful about the future of lung cancer research. It's National Lung Cancer Screening Day. We stand with our lung cancer physicians/scientists/advocates to bring attention to this disease. Ideally, we would prevent lung cancer. But if we cannot, then let's detect it earlier. Early detection can cause a stage migration at the time of initial diagnosis (i.e., less stage 3/4 and more stage 1/2), when our therapies have a better success rate. May is Bladder Cancer Awareness Month. The show aired live May 5. Tawagi practices in the Division of Hematology and Oncology at UI Health, where her clinical focus is the treatment of genitourinary cancers including but not limited to bladder, kidney, testicular and prostate cancer. Her research interests focus on clinical trials in genitourinary cancers, in addition to the use of immunotherapy in cancer treatment while developing strategies to diagnose, treat and minimize side effects related to immunotherapy. Screening for colorectal cancer isn’t exactly something most people look forward to. It can be uncomfortable, invasive and time-consuming. No wonder 1 in 3 people who should get tested have never received any screening, according to the American Cancer Society. Yet this is essential care, as it can detect cancer when it is in its early stages and easier to treat. In fact, colorectal cancer is the second-most-common cause of cancer death in the United States. More than 53,000 Americans are expected to die of it this year alone. Here’s the good news: A new blood test might soon offer a more convenient way for people to get tested. Though it is not as effective at detecting cancers and precancerous polyps as colonoscopy, it can be a valuable tool for individuals who otherwise would put off testing.
