On this day, OAR celebrates and honors all Indigenous Peoples and communities all across the country and all OAR participants and their families who are a part of these beautiful communities. Although there is so much to celebrate and be grateful for, we also want to pay our respects and take a moment to also allow room for mourning and grievances for all the ancestors, land, and culture that was taken from Indigenous Peoples and their communities due to the colonization of Indigenous peoples and their land. As a part of OAR’s Upstream efforts, we lift up the voices of all Black, Indigenous, Latine/x/o/a, Asian, and Multicultural (BILAM) people, to create a safe, harmonious community for all to live and thrive. We want to remind our community of the true meaning behind the “Thanksgiving” holiday - that it is a colonized holiday that is a reminder of the harm, violence, and repression brought upon Indigenous Peoples and the theft of their Native lands. Not just today, but every single day, we want to honor and respect all Indigenous Peoples, their ancestors, and all the contributions, culture, labor, and land that belong to these communities, and help dismantle the colonized projection of this holiday. The #Furneaux #Collective (named for the Furneaux Group of Islands of which Flinders Island is the largest Island) is the next step in the #FlindersIsland #Regenerative Tourism Living Lab journey. We can't be more excited! The Furneaux Collective is a new community-led, place-based governance approach that works for the Island, its communities, and environments. It's what happens when communities are given the support they need to identify and address the challenges they face. It's what happens when lived experience, local knowledge, and good generative conversations evolve into action. It's what happens when change happens with and through communities. 💚 A PLATFORM FOR ALL VOICES We are your go-to place for networking, community dialogue, and capacity-building. We also serve as a liaison for government agencies seeking to understand our community's interests and concerns. 💚 A LEGAL FRAMEWORK & FINANCIAL SUPPORT We have laid down the legal foundations to become an entity that can apply for and manage grants effectively, ensuring the future viability of our community projects. 💚 ECONOMIC RENAISSANCE We're not just first movers; we're consistent movers. We continue to build on the regeneration started by the Islander Way project, pushing forward with initiatives that renew both the environment and our community. 💚 INCLUSIVE PROSPERITY From supporting Aboriginal Truth-telling to offering economic opportunities, we are committed to social equity. 💚 DIGITAL INTERFACE We understand the need for a cohesive digital presence. Our website (and future app) will serve as a hub for both visitors and community members. 💚 MEASURABLE IMPACT We'll help community groups and businesses quantify their social license, emphasising the value brought by the visitor economy to both community and nature. "The recent activation of the Furneaux Collective is a critical step in the evolution of the Islander Way Framework. Over the past two years, the Islander Way project has set a course for transformative change on Flinders Island, with The Furneaux Collective emerging as a key player in the journey.
