This is the inaugural edition of The Plain Talk Show, where Elizabeth de Stadler 🎈 and Liezl van Zyl shoot the breeze about everything plain language. Think of it as riding in cars (or getting coffee) with an information designer and a lawyer. Our first guest will be Robert de Rooy of Comic Contracts fame. His work is mentioned in almost every workshop or conference about legal design. Join us! Novcon Hey Plain Jane #contractdesign #contractvisualisation

RdR says some lawyers earn a living being asked to translate documents which are impossible for users to read... surely we can do better?
LvL says we know that people do not read their contracts, but if they do, we want them to understand.
I love this type of contracting! Do you see this approach as an opportunity for children to engage with contracts and legal principles? I'm thinking as a way to present T&Cs for platforms they use and social media etc?
RdR says access to legal information is about dignity, empowering them by creating contracts to suit their needs. 100%
Hi all, as a recovering lawyer myself, I really recognize the value and believe it is extremely important! But I can see how difficult it could be to convince the more conservative sides in the sectors so I was wondering if you tried taking a “hybrid” approach. For example providing the comic and the “legal” language underneath it or a “see more” option with some more details. I could see that being more “digestible” by the legal/commercial sector. (Sorry if that was already talked about and I missed it, I joined a bit late).
EdS says she does not write for the court - we create contracts to protect and nurture relationships. We "eliminate disputes".
I've been training people on contracts for years and very rarely do two people understand the same clause in the same way... it is possible to simplify to avoid these amb iguities.
EdS says she thinks people are often intimidated by text contracts whereas RdR says people are more engaged by visuals (rather than the wall of text) & more likely to pick it up in the first place.
RdR says the law is averse to anything different and there is an aura that says contracts have to sound different.
